Phyllis Smith (born August 15, 1949) is an American actress and casting associate.
She is best known for her role as Phyllis Vance in the television series The Office and her critically acclaimed voice role as Sadness in the film Inside Out.

Early life
Smith was born in 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the second oldest of nine siblings. In 1968, she graduated from Cleveland High School.
Education
Smith attended the University of Missouri–St. Louis obtained a degree in elementary education in 1972. She served as a dancer, a cheerleader for the St. Louis Cardinals football team, and a burlesque performer in the 1970s and 1980s. "No stripping was done," she said, "but I did wear feathers." Following a knee injury, she was forced to stop dancing. Smith briefly worked as a telemarketer, but lasted just three hours before resigning. She continued her work as an actress and in casting in Hollywood, California. In the film Caddyshack, Smith's first paid acting role was as an extra.
Career
Smith was employed as a casting associate under Allison Jones' direction on the television series The Office when she was offered the role of Phyllis Lapin, a soft-spoken saleswoman who tended to disagree with pompous office manager Michael Scott. In the category "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series," she received Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2006 and 2007. Smith appeared on Celebrity Family Feud in June 2008. In 2011, she appeared in Bad Teacher, a supporting role. She portrayed Sadness in the Pixar film Inside Out in 2015, receiving acclaim for her role. Later, she appeared in The OA, a Netflix original.
