Phyllis Logan (born 11 January 1956) is a Scottish actress best known for her appearances in Lovejoy (1986–93) and Mrs Hughes (later Carson) in Downton Abbey (2010–15).
For the 1983 film Another Time, Another Place, she received the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer.
Secrets & Lies (1996) and Shooting Fish (1997) were two of her other film appearances.
Early life
Logan's father, David, was a Rolls-Royce engineer and a trade union king, and he served as the secretary of his local branch of the AUEW (Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers). Phyllis is the youngest in her family, and she has a brother and a sister. When she was at drama school, her father died at the age of 59.
Education
Logan was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, and grew up in nearby Johnstone, where she was educated at Johnstone High School. She studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and graduated with the James Bridie gold medal in 1977.

Career
Logan performed in the Dundee Repertory Theatre after graduation. She left Edinburgh in 1979 to work on stage. She appeared on Scottish television regularly. She first met writer-director Michael Radford on BBC Scotland's The White Bird Passes. Logan appeared in his first film film, Another Place (1983), for which she received the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles in 1983. She was also selected for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Logan was most identified with Lady Jane Felsham's role in nearly 50 episodes of Lovejoy, a comedy-drama for television, before her time in Downton Abbey, where she played the housekeeper Mrs Hughes.
In a survey conducted by RadioTimes.com (the official website of Radio Times), her character in Downton Abbey, Mrs Hughes, was voted the best Downton Abbey character of all time.
She appeared in the 1996 Mike Leigh film Secrets & Lies alongside Timothy Spall and Brenda Blethyn.
