Phoebe Cates Life

Phoebe Belle Cates (born July 16, 1963) is an American former film actress, singer, and model best known for her appearances in several 1980s films, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Gremlins.

Early life

Cates was born in New York City on July 16, 1963, to a family of television and Broadway production insiders. She was the niece of Lily and Joseph Cates (originally Joseph Katz), a well-known Broadway performer and a pioneering figure in television, and she aided in the creation of The $64,000 Question. Gilbert Cates, her uncle's uncle, produced numerous television specials, many in collaboration with Cates' father, as well as many annual Academy Awards shows. Cates is a female from the United States; both her father and maternal grandmother are of Russian Jewish descent, whereas her maternal grandfather, who was Chinese-Filipino, was of Chinese Jewish descent. Cates' mother was born in Shanghai, China.

The Professional Children's School and the Juilliard School were both attended by Cates. Cates began modelling in Seventeen and other teen-oriented magazines at the age of ten. She wanted to be a dancer a few years ago. She eventually earned a scholarship to the School of American Ballet, but she had to cancel after a knee injury at the age 14. She began a short, fruitful career as a model. "It was just the same thing, over and over." Cates expressed her dissatisfaction with the company: "It was just the same thing." "I did it purely for the money after a while."

Personal life

Cates and her then-boyfriend Stavros Merjos shared an apartment in Greenwich Village in the early 1980s. She met him in 1979 after she arrived at Studio 54 with family friend Andy Warhol.

Cates met actor Kevin Kline in 1983 during an audition for a role (awarded to Meg Tilly) in The Big Chill. At the time, they were all dating other people at the time, but two years later, they became intimately involved. They married in 1989, and Phoebe Cates Kline took their name. The Klines have migrated to Fifth Avenue in New York from Central Park, where they raised their two children, Owen Joseph Kline (born 1991) and Greta Kline (born 1994). In the 2001 film The Anniversary Party, Owen and Greta appeared, as did their parents. Owen appeared in the 2005 film The Squid and the Whale, as well as making his directorial debut with the coming-of-age black comedy Funny Pages, and Greta fronts the band Frankie Cosmos.

Cates opened a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York in 2005.

Phoebe Cates Career

Career

Cates was featured on the front page of Seventeen magazine four times as a teen model. The first issue in 1979 was the first in the series. She appeared on the front page of Seventeen three more times and more often in 1979 and 1980.

Cates decided to pursue acting after being dissatisfied with modeling. Following a screen test in New York, she was given her first part in the film Paradise (1982). She was unsure about doing the nudity job that was needed, but her father encouraged her to do the job.

Paradise was Cates' debut film. The film was shot in Israel from March to May 1981. Although still a teenager (age 17), she appeared in the film several full-frontal nude scenes and several rear scenes. The film had a similar plot to The Blue Lagoon (1980). She also performed the film's main theme song and released an album of the same name. In a 1982 interview, she recalled having difficulty with career change because, as a model, she had to be aware of the camera, but not so much in front of a film camera. "I regret being in the film was not to do a film like that again." Cates' producers reportedly used a body double to film nude close-ups of her character without alerting her. Willie Aames, her co-star, says, "She will have nothing to do with the film." She's really worried about it. She will not do any promotion with me."

Cates appeared in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), which featured what Rolling Stone has described as "the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history." She was reportedly having the most fun in filming that film.

Cates appeared in "Just One Touch" and "How Do I Let You Know" in the film's soundtrack for the second year.

Cates appeared in the television mini-series Lace in 1984, based on a Shirley Conran book. "She wanted to get away from a certainness in her film roles," she said. She so impressed the writer during her audition that he wanted to add her to her then and then. Cates struggled with her portrayal of a tumultuous actress because, despite her character's nefarious persona, she wanted the audience to sympathize with her. She did not read Conran's book, on which the film was based, because she did not want to have a "fixed image." "Which one of you bitches is my mother," the film's most well-known line is "Which one of you bitches is my mother?" In 1993, TV Guide named "the best line in television history" as the best line in television history. Lace II, the sequel mini-series, also starred she.

Cates co-starred in Gremlins (1984), Steven Spielberg's highest-grossing film of her career, in summer 1984. Kate Beringer, a six-year-old actress, will reprise her role in the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990).

Cates made her stage debut at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in June 1984, when Soviet writer Viktor Rozov performed The Nest of the Wood Grouse, an off-Broadway play. Although doing the role, Cates said she "felt a certain freedom and a certain connection with acting that I had never fully felt before." Cates appeared Off-Broadway again two years later in Rich Relations, directed by David Henry Hwang at the Second Stage Theatre, two years ago. In December 1989, Cates made her Broadway debut in a revival of Paddy Chayefsky's The Tenth Man at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.

"There are simply not that many good parts in film," Cates told a reporter in 1988, but theater has "huge amounts of good women's roles"; I've only been happy as an actor for about two years, but I've only been happy as an actor." "I rarely watch my film work."

Cates continued to appear in films into the early 1990s, mainly in supporting roles or as part of ensemble casts. These include Date with an Angel (1987), Bright Lights, Big City (1988), Shag (1989), Drop Dead Fred (1991), Rest & Motion (1993), and Bridget Fonda (1993). These films received mixed to bad feedback and failed to make an impact at the box office, which was disappointing to make a difference at the box office.

Cates had been intended to appear in Steve Martin's daughter in the hit comedy Father of the Bride (1991), but her first child made her cancel the subject.

Cates appeared in the fact-based comedy-drama Princess Caraboo (1994), which also starred Kevin Kline. Owen and Greta, Cates' last film before she seemed to shift her attention away from acting to raising her children.

In 2001, Cates briefly returned to acting in The Anniversary Party (2001), as a favor to her best friend and former Fast Times at Ridgemont High castmate Jennifer Jason Leigh, who produced the film.

Kate Beringer, the voice of her Gremlins character in Cates' video game Lego Dimensions, appeared in 2015.
