Philly Joe Jones Life

Joseph Rudolph "Philly Joe" Jones (July 15, 1923 – August 30, 1985) was an American jazz drummer best known as the drummer for the first "Great" Miles Davis Quintet.

He should not be confused with "Papa" Jo Jones, another drummer with Count Basie for a long time.

The two men died only a few days apart.

Philly Joe Jones Career

Early career

Jones appeared on The Kiddie Show on the Philadelphia radio station WIP as a child. During World War II, he was stationed in the United States Army.

He joined Café Society in New York City in 1947, where he competed with the best bebop players of the day, including Tadd Dameron. Jones performed and recorded with Miles Davis Quintet from 1955 to 1958, a band that came to be known as "The Quintet" (along with Red Garland on piano, John Coltrane on sax, and Paul Chambers on bass). Davis confessed that Jones was his favorite drummer and wrote in his autobiography that he would always look for Jones in other drummers.

Jones began as a leader but later became a sideman with other musicians, including Bill Evans and Hank Mobley. Evans, who also stated in a frank way that Jones was his all-time favorite drummer.

Jones lived in London and Paris between 1967 and 1972, performing and recording with artists including Archie Shepp, Mal Waldron, and Hank Mobley. Jones taught at a specially run Hampstead, London, for two years (1967–69), but the Musicians' Union barred him from ever working in the UK. Mo' Joe, his 1968 album (which was also released as Trailways Express) was recorded in London with local performers (including Peter King, Harold McNair, Chris Pyne, Kenny Wheeler, and others).

Jones appeared on Bill Evans in 1976 and 1978, appeared on Galaxy in 1977-79, and worked with Red Garland. Jones founded Dameronia, devoted to the music of composer Tadd Dameron's composer Tadd Dameron, in 1981, and he was in charge of the group until his death in 1985 from a heart attack.
