Philip Ballantyne Kerr (22 February 1956 – 23 March 2018) was a British author best known for his Bernie Gunther series of historical detective thrillers.

Early life

Kerr was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where his father was an engineer and his mother worked as a secretary. He was educated at a grammar school in Northampton. He attended the University of Birmingham from 1974 to 1980, receiving a master's degree in law and philosophy. Kerr worked as an advertising copywriter for Saatchi & Saatchi before being a full-time writer in 1989. Kerr started his literary career at the age of twelve by composing pornographic stories and loaning them to classmates for a fee.

He is a writer who writes both adult fiction and nonfiction. Bernhard "Bernie" Gunther's Bernhard "Bernie" Gunther's series of 14 historical romances set in Germany and elsewhere during the 1930s, Second World War, and the Cold War. P. B. Kerr, a writer for children's books, as well as the Children of the Lamp collection. Kerr contributed to The Evening Standard and the New Statesman. He was married to Jane Thynne, a fellow writer; the couple lived in Wimbledon, London, and had three children. He died of cancer on March 23, 2018, at the age of 62. He finished Metropolis, his 14th Bernie Gunther book, shortly before his death, which was published posthumously in 2019.
