Phil Alden Robinson (born March 1, 1950) is an American film producer and screenwriter whose films include Field of Dreams, Sneakers, and The Sum of All Fears.

Early life and education

Robinson was born in Long Beach, New York, the son of Jessie Frances and S. Jesse Robinson, a drama critic for the New York Journal American and a media consultant for the National Distillers & Chemical Corp.'s liquor division. Robinson earned an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1996.

Career

Field of Dreams (1989) was directed by Robinson. It earned Robinson nominations for the Directors Guild of America Award, the Writer Guild of America Award, and the Best Screenplay Adaptation award (the film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Score Oscars). The Christopher Award and Premiere Magazine's Readers Poll for Best Picture of 1989 are among the film's accolades.

The Mystery Writers of America nominated Sneakers (1992) for an Edgar Award.

Both Emmy Awards, three NAACP Image Awards (including Best TV Movie), a Sound Editors Guild Award, and the Humanitas Prize were among Robinson's 2000 television dramas for Best Original Longform Screenplay. It also received the Christopher Award, the San Francisco Film Society's "Golden Gate Award," and the National Association of Minorities in Communications Image Award.

He (along with all the series's producers) was nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award for Best Directing of a Miniseries, Film, or Dramatic Special for Band of Brothers (2001).

Robinson was voted "Writer of the Year" by the National Association of Theatre Owners in 1990, and the Writers Guild of America presented him with the Valentine Davies Award in 1994 for contributions to the entertainment industry and the community-at-large.

He served with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees as an observer on humanitarian trips to Somalia and Bosnia, for which he wrote and directed his first of five documentaries for ABC News Nightline in 1992. In 1997, Sarajevo Spring, the newest one, was nominated for a national News & Documentary Emmy Award.

Robinson, the current Vice President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has served on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America, and is a past member of the UCLA Hammer Museum's Board.
