Mixed martial arts career
In December 2014, Yan debuted in MMA at the Eurasian Fighting Championship - Baikal Fight. He defeated Murad Bakiev, who was also a debutant, in the third round. Yan has been a member of Absolute Championship Berkut in Russia since 2015. Since his first in the promotion, where he defeated Brazilian fighter Renato Velame, who had only lost 26 fights in his MMA career, he is expected to have gained a following. However, Yan won the war by vote. In Yan's third fight, he defeated Kharon Orzumiev in a first-round match in 47 seconds. In the first round of Professional Fight Night 10: Russia Cup, Yan defeated Artur Mirzakhakhanyan in his next fight.

Yan was supposed to face Magomedov at AFB 57: Payback in Moscow in the spring of 2017. After fighting all five hard-fought rounds, Yan exacted revenge and defeated Magomedov by unanimous verdict. He was voted champion of the ACB and was subsequently named champion of the ACB bantamweight champion.
Following his victory, Yan returned in September 2017 to face Brazilian opponent Matheus Mattos at ACB: 71 in Moscow. Yan defeated Mattos with a left uppercut, causing Mattos to collapse to his back, forcing the referee to call the contest off. By a third-round knockout, he successfully defended his bantamweight title.

Yan was slated to face top-14 UFC rankings Douglas Silva de Andrade at the UFC Fight Night 136 on September 15, 2018. However, Andrade, citing a foot injury, was forced to leave the fight on August 9th, and Jin Soo Son took his place. Son weighed one pound over the bantamweight non-title fight limit of 136 pounds, and he was fined 20% of his purse to Yan at weigh-ins. By a majority vote, Yan won the contest. On December 29, 2018, a bantamweight match between Yan and Douglas Silva de Andrade was postponed for UFC 232. After de Andrade's corner ended the contest, he won the fight by a technical knockout in round two.
Yan announced on social media on January 10 that he had signed a new, four-fight deal with the UFC. At UFC Fight Night 145, Yan faced John Dodson on February 23, 2019. Yan won the fight by unanimous vote after landing hard punches and kicks, but Dodson's back was against the cage.

On December 14, 2019, Yan faced Urijah Faber at UFC 245. Yan gained the fight by knockout in the third round after largely dominating the striking exchanges and knocking Faber down in the second round. He received the Best of the Night award for his efforts.
After the fight with Faber, Yan was dismissive of bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo's claim that Cejudo is ducked by Cejudo. Cejudo revealed he would be dropping out of mixed martial arts competition after Cejudo's title defense against Dominick Cruz at UFC 249. On July 24, 2020, Yan then met former WEC and UFC Featherweight Champion José Aldo for the vacant title. In the fifth round, he won the match by a technical knockout.
On December 12, 2020, Yan would make his first title defense against Aljamain Sterling against UFC 256. However, it was confirmed on November 22nd that the match had been pulled from the UFC 256 card and the match was postponed until March 2021 at UFC 259. Yan was disqualified in the fourth round due to an illegal knee injury, thus losing the UFC Bantamweight Championship. Two judges had Yan up 29-28 and one had the currency up 29-28 before the illegal knee.
On October 30, 2021, a rematch with the Sterling was expected to take place at UFC 267. On the other hand, the sterling fell from the competition on September 25th due to persistent neck pains. Cory Sandhagen was brought on as a replacement in the Interim UFC Bantamweight Championship. Yan was the victor of the match by unanimous vote. This bout was voted the Night of the Night award by the Red Cross.
On March 5th, 2022, UFC 272 will hold a title unification match with Aljamain Sterling. However, the bout was postponed and will take place at UFC 273 on January 11, 2022. Yan lost the match on a split vote. In addition, he received his third award in the "Fan Bonus of the Night" category.
