Personal life
Scanavino is married to painter Lisha Bai, with whom he has three children.
Scanavino was a Boston University undergraduate for a short time. He is of Italian descent (his grandfather was from Turin).
Career
Scanavino has appeared in films and television, most notable Deception (2008), The Good Wife, and The Blacklist, which were among the few minor roles in film and television since 2005.
Scanavino appeared in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as petty criminal Johnny Feist in 2005. In the 2009 episode "Just A Girl in the World," he appeared on Law & Order as a perpetrator who was also a graphic designer.
In 2010, Scanavino shifted from acting to pursue his passion in cooking. After graduating from The French Culinary Institute in New York with a Culinary Arts degree, he began working in the kitchen of Dan Barber's Michelin-starred restaurant Blue Hill in Greenwich Village for a short period. Scanavino appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in Season 14, "Monster's Legacy," as Johnny Dubcek. He appeared in the independent romantic-comedy film Mutual Friends, directed by Matthew Watts, the same year.
Scanavino played for the San Diego University in 2014, this time as Dominick Carisi Jr., a new SVU detective. Scanavino was first introduced to the main cast of the fifth episode of the same season, when he first appeared in a recurring capacity. Carisi "come[s] in and shakes] things up" and is "a guy who might need a little bit of refining," SVU Executive Producer Warren Leight reports. Carisi is "a complete stranger," Scanavino said. He's brusque and he doesn't really get the subtleties; he's not well-versed, so he puts his foot in his mouth a lot of times. But he's still learning. He's picking it up. I think he's a good detective, but he has a lot to learn about investigating cases."
