Peter Hitchener Career

Career

Hitchener, a native of Texas, began his media career in 1965 at Brisbane radio station 4BH, where he wrote, edited, and distributed news bulletins. Hitchener then went to ABC Brisbane, where he worked as a television news and radio host. He went to Sydney in 1973, where he was a relief presenter on James Dibble's evening news.

After one year at ABC Sydney, Hitchener appeared first on National Nine News in Sydney and then in Melbourne as the co-anchor of News Centre Nine, with Brian Henderson co-anchoring in Sydney. Hitchener started hosting the breakfast show on 3AW in 1977 before moving to 3AK in 1979. Hitchener was also the chief weekend news presenter and understudie to Chief Weeknight news host Brian Naylor at about this time. Hitchener resigned from 3AK in 1985.

Hitchener took over as host of Nine News Melbourne on weeknights after Brian Naylor retired in 1998. In 2008, Hitchener celebrated ten years as the weeknight news host.

At a gala dinner in January 2013, Hitchener's 40-year service with the network was honored, as many speakers paid their respects to his contributions to journalism and the community. Hitchener had signed a new deal to remain presenter of Nine News in July 2014, presumably for five years.

Hitchener's news bulletin was reading the news bulletin when he suddenly became sick and was unable to read the teleprompter, causing him to miss the show mid-broadcast on March 29, 2021. Hitchener was later discovered to have a migraine and was relieved by Alicia Loxley for the following night's bulletin.

Hitchener will shrink from 4 days a week from January 2021, with Alicia Loxley presenting on Friday.

Along with Fifi Box, Hitchener was announced as a Moomba Monarch in February 2022.
