Peter Dinklage Career

Career

Dinklage first tried to find acting work, partially because he refused to accept roles for actors with disabilities, such as "elves or leprechauns." He made his credited film debut in the low-budget independent comedy-drama Living in Oblivion (1995), where he costarred Steve Buscemi. It tells the tale of a director, crew, and cast of a low-budget independent film shot in the middle of New York City. Dinklage played a jumbled actor with a sarcastic attitude who cries for his stereotyped roles. He appeared as a building manager in Bullet's crime drama starring rapper Tupac Shakur for the next year. Even after his well-received appearance in Living in Oblivion, Dinklage was unable to find someone willing to be his agent. Dinklage was cast in the comedy 13 Moons (2002) after a Buscemi tip to director Alexandre Rockwell. When he was later interviewed for a theater website, he answered "the romantic lead" who gets the girl.

Finbar McBride, who is a quiet, distant, unmarried man in the 2003 Tom McCarthy-directed film The Station Agent, Dinklage found his breakthrough role. According to co-star Bobby Cannavale, the film took three years to produce and wasn't written with Dinklage in mind at first. McCarthy "set out to tell a tale about a man who had chosen to exclude himself from the rest of the world," Cannavale said, but when McCarthy actually started "putting pen to paper" for the screenplay, he decided to write the role for him. Dinklage said that "roles written for someone of my size are usually "flat," implying that "they're not sexual, not romantic" and "they are not flawed." What attracted him to McCarthy's book was that it was not one of the stereotypical roles for dwarfism play; rather, McBride has "romantic emotions" as well as "anger and..." "Weaknesses" are in the story. Since being nominated for Best Actor and Screen Actor nominations, he has been coveted for both Independent Spirit Award and Screen Actor Guild Award for Best Actor nominations. "Dinklage projects both size and intelligence in the revealing reticence of his face," reviewer Andrew Sarris wrote in the New York Observer. The Station Agent, aside from being Dinklage's highest-rated film on the review company Rotten Tomatoes, was marginally profitable at the box office, grossing over $8 million against its modest budget.

Dinklage appeared in the direct-to-DVD film Tiptoes (2004) starring Gary Oldman and Matthew McConaughey. The film received critical feedback, particularly Oldman's role as a person with dwarfism. According to Dinklage, the original cut of the film was "gorgeous," but the film was immediately after being turned in, and it was re-cut into a "rom-com with dwarfs." "Why did you put Gary Oldman on his knees?" Dinklage said of the Oldman controversy. That's almost blackface.' I have my own beliefs about political correctness, but I was just like, It's Gary Oldman. He's going to do what he wants, and I'm so glad to be here.

Dinklage appeared in several off-Broadway films, including Richard III, this year. Miles Finch, an irritable children's author who beats Buddy Hobbs (Will Ferrell) after mistakenly mistakening him for an elf appeared in the Christmas comedy film Elf. In 2005, he appeared in the short-lived CBS science fiction series Threshold and appeared as a wedding planner in The Baxter. He also appeared in Lassie as a traveling circus performer.

Dinklage co-starred with Vin Diesel in Find Me Guilty, a courtroom drama directed by Sidney Lumet in 2006. The film tells the true story of America's longest Mafia trial; Dinklage played Ben Klandis, the lead defense counsel. Although the film was a commercial failure, critical reactions to it were generally favorable, although it was a commercial fail. Roger Ebert, a Chicago Sun-Times film critic, praised Dinklage's performance, saying the role he plays distinguishes him as "concise, articulate, and professional." In episodes of Nip/Tuck last year, he portrayed Marlowe Sawyer. He appeared in NBC's 30 Rock as Stewart as Stewart in a fictionalized version of himself in an episode of the HBO series Entourage. Dinklage appeared in the British romantic comedy Penelope playing Lemon, a tabloid journalist, the same year. Critics generally gave the film mixed praise.

Dinklage appeared in the 2007 British comedy film Death at a Funeral, reprising his role in the 2010 American remake; the films tell the tale of a family struggling with a variety of problems after their father's death. He starred as villainous Simon Bar Sinister in Underdog, which was poorly received, but he had some commercial success later this year.

In the 2008 film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Dinklage played Trumpkin. Dinklage's role as a "cutesy stereotype he has attempted to avoid" was a box office disappointment, with worldwide revenues of $419.7 million. Later this year, he appeared in Uncle Vanya (directed by his wife, Erica Schmidt) in Bard College's annual Bard SummerScape, the Upstate New York summer drama on the Annandale-on-Hudson campus. He appeared in the Australian film I Love You Too with Brendan Cowell and Peter Helliar in 2010.

Tyrion Lannister was depicted in HBO's Game of Thrones, an adaptation of author George R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, between 2011 and 2019. Game of Thrones takes place on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, chronicling noble families' power struggles as they vie for securing the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Tyrion is a member of House Lannister, one of the richest and most influential families in Westeros, and he uses his position as a Lannister to minimize the effects of the marginalization and derision that has characterized his life.

As showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss announced that Dinklage, the actor's "core of humanity, is clearly in keeping with the film" as the actor's "core of humanity, encased by a shell of sardonic dry wit, was the first actor to be cast in May 2009.

Dinklage's first meeting with the designers was cautious; as a stranger, he would not play elves or leprechauns" and was unsure about genre roles. The character, according to Benioff and Weiss, was "a different kind of fantasy little guy," or in the actor's words, "No beard, no pointy shoes, a romantic, human being." Dinklage decided to play Tyrion until the meeting was half over, in part because "they told me how popular he was." "If he hadn't accepted the role, oh, boy, I don't know what we would have done," Martin said of Dinklage's casting. The show was a commercial success, and it came to an end in May 2019 after being revived for multiple seasons and ending with its eighth season.

Dinklage has received acclaim for his work. Dinklage, "gives a winning show that is charming, morally ambiguous, and self-aware," Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said. According to Dan Kois of The New York Times, Dinklage's appearance has made the role "all the more popular." "In many ways, Game of Thrones belongs to Dinklage," the Los Angeles Times wrote. Tyrion was dubbed the "most quotable" character and "one of the series's most beloved characters," according to HuffPost.

He has gone on to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2019, as well as the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. Dinklage was given first billing in the series's second season due to his appearance and increased screen time. He appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman that he had once attempted to read the books the show is based on but that they had difficulty finding them. "George Martin, our author, is probably going to murder my character right now," he joked. Dinklage and four of his Game of Thrones co-stars earned them to be some of the highest paid actors on television in 2014, though sources differ on the actors' per-episode salaries. Dinklage lent his voice to the role of Tyrion in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, a video game based on the series.

Captain Gutt of Dinklage appeared in Ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012. Dinklage said he prepared himself by making sure to rest his voice during the recording sessions as it was his first voice acting gig, and that he liked doing roles he had not done before. Dinklage hosted an episode of NBC's late-night sketch comedy "Space Pants" in 2013, and after appearing in a sketch of him and Gwen Stefani performing a new song named "Space Pants," he performed a new one in April 2016. He has been lauded for his work.

Dinklage appeared in the comedy horror film Knights of Badassdom opposite Ryan Kwanten and Steve Zahn in 2014. The film follows three best friends who go to the woods to perform a live action Dungeons & Dragons role play, when they mistakenly summon a demon from Hell. Bolivar Trask, the criminal from the X-Men: Days of Future Past, was cast in the same year. Dinklage said he didn't want to approach the character specifically as a villain, but that Trask "actually sees what he's doing as a good thing." He also appeared in the 2014 video game Destiny, but Nolan North replaced him in August 2015. It was due to scheduling conflicts posed by Dinklage's other acting commitments, according to executive producer Mark Noseworthy.

Dinklage appeared in the science fiction comedy film Pixels in 2015 as a former arcade champion named Eddie Plant. Billy Mitchell's plant was partially inspired by it, according to director Chris Columbus. Critically panned the film. The Guardian praised Dinklage's result in an otherwise "dreary romp."

Dinklage sang The Mighty Eagle in The Angry Birds Movie in 2016 and recorded a song for the musical's soundtrack.

Sam Bloom's role was lauded by reviewers after his new film Rememory (2017) failed to please reviewers, but his performance was lauded. Yasmin Kleinbart, a film critic, said that "Dinklage is more than this film," and that "delivers a soulful lead role that will capture viewers' interest." Dinklage appeared in the dramatic drama film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, starring director Martin McDonagh and the drama Three Christs, both of which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, with the former actress receiving a lot of attention. Dinklage produced and starred in I Believe We're Alone Now, a post-apocalyptic drama based on the friendship between Del, played by Dinklage, and Grace, played by Elle Fanning, in 2018. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and was later released to theaters on September 14, 2018.

Dinklage and his longtime producer David Ginsburg formed Estuary Films, a joint venture film firm based in 2016. We're Alone Now is the first film under Estuary, according to I.

Dinklage appeared in the Marvel Studios film Avengers: Infinity War as the character Eitri, a giant dwarf.

Sacha Gervasi, a writer and writer, spent many years directing a film based on actor Hervé Villechaize's final days, who died by suicide shortly after his 1993 interview with Gervasi. Dinklage appeared and appeared in My Dinner with Hervé in 2018. The film was vetted by HBO, with Dinklage co-starring Jamie Dornan.

He appeared in the title role of Cyrano, a stage musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac written by his wife Erica Schmidt, with songs by The National in August and September 2018. He reprised his role in a 2021 film adaptation of the musical, for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

In 2021, Dinklage portrayed mobster Roman Lunyov in the crime thriller I Care a Lot. In other media, including Training Day and Orange is the New Black, Tony Sokol praised his character, likening his appearance to Russian mobsters.

In 2017, Dinklage had been attached to act in the American comedy O Lucky Day, which will be directed by Jon S. Baird, in which he will portray a con-man pretending to be a leprechaun.

Dinklage bought the rights to Joe R. Lansdale's book The Thicket on October 5, 2017.

Dinklage will appear in Hitpig, the forthcoming animated film. Estuary Films, his production company, has signed a first look at Entertainment One's first look contract.
