He oversaw global operations spanning five continents, including the production and distribution of film and television content; television, satellite, and cable television broadcasting; and News Corp.'s rapid expansion into the digital media and internet space.

Chernin made a name for herself as an executive with a unique blend of both the creative and corporate sides of the entertainment industry during his two decades with News Corporation. He worked with Twentieth Century Fox Filmed Entertainment and, before that, the Fox Broadcasting Company. In the United States and internationally, he has also been instrumental in Fox's meteoric growth in sports, cable, and general entertainment television viewing and distribution.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation produced the two top-grossing films of all time, Titanic and Avatar, under Chernin's leadership; the Fox Broadcasting Company became the No. 1 in the United Kingdom. The top-ranked network in the main demographic of 18- to 49 years olds, as well as Twentieth Century Fox Television, Fox's network production arm, became the No. ONE. All television networks have a one-source of programming.

During Chernin's tenure, News Corporation's cable television network group saw explosive growth during his tenure – from zero to more than 400 million cable subscribers in fewer than ten years. Fox News Channel, FX, Fox Sports Net, Fox Movie Channel, National Geographic Television, SPEED, and the Fox Reality Channel were among the world's most valuable cable collections by the time Chernin left: Fox News Channel, FX, Fox Sports Net, Fox Sports Net, Fox Sports Net, Fox News Channel, Fox News Net, Fox Sports Net, Fox News Channel, National Geographic Television, SPEED, and the Fox Reality Channel were among the most valuable cable assets by the time Chernin Chernin spent four years as chairman and chief executive officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment, where he oversaw all aspects of the company's worldwide film production, marketing, and distribution activities prior to his 1996 debut. Chernin was expected to leave News Corp. by June 2009, when his deal came to an end, and James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch's youngest son, was rumored in the media, was fired. Peter Chernin, the Wall Street Journal, announced on February 24, 2009, that he had left News Corporation after 20 years to pursue independent entrepreneurial ventures. Chase Carey was named Chernin's replacement at his position on June 4, 2009.

Chernin was approached by the Tribune Company in October 2010 to serve as either CEO or chairman of the board. Chernin's employment in Yahoo had also caused rumors. After Carol Bartz' unexpected departure in September 2011, she's into the future. Chernin denied that he was interested in exploring work with the company at the All Things Digital AsiaD Conference in Hong Kong on October 20, 2011.
