Peter Adamson Career

Career

Adamson started attending LAMDA in London but then left after two months. He returned to the North West after spending many years in repertory theatre, where he met his wife Jean. He formed his own rep theatre company, directing and appearing in plays and summer shows at Weston-super-Mare. He appeared on London's West End and first appeared in a variety show in 1956. He appeared in television dramas including Granada Television's Skyport and Knight Errant Limited before being cast as Len Fairclough in Granada's fledgling soap opera Coronation Street. In January 1961, his character first appeared on television.

In the Emlyn Williams play Someone's Waiting, Adamson took two months away from Coronation Street to play Mr Fenn in September 1970. He was in New Zealand from November to December 1972, appearing as Gus in Harold Pinter's The Dumb Waiter. He appeared in the play Nightfall in 1973.

In December 1981, he was honoured in an episode of This Is Your Life when Eamonn Andrews was pleasantly surprised in London's Leicester Square.

Adamson, who confessed to having a drink problem and was heavily involved in bar brawls, earned a reputation as a hellraiser off-screen. After being arrested for drunk driving, he was fined £30 and barred from driving for a year.

He stopped drinking alcohol after being banned from the show unpaid for a week, and the Rossendale General Hospital in the Rossendale Valley began drying out in July 1969. Adamson was missing from episodes 921 to 935. He attended Alcoholics Anonymous and remained sober for 15 years, but after his wife's death, he rediscovered alcoholism again.
