Perry Groves Career

Playing career

Groves was born in Bow, London, but he competed for Cornard Dynamos in the village of Great Cornard on the Suffolk- Essex border as a youth. Groves then spent a trial with Wolves as a schoolboy before being signed as an apprentice for Colchester United in 1981. He turned professional a year later, and in the next four seasons, he played in 142 league games for the United States, scoring 26 goals.

He signed for Arsenal for £75,000 in September 1986, becoming the first signing by new boss George Graham. In his first season with the club, he helped set up Charlie Nicholas for the winner in the 1987 League Cup final, dribbling past three Liverpool players before dismissing the ball off.

He started most of Arsenal's games in the 1988-1988 season, replacing Charlie Nicholas as strike partner and Alan Smith, and helping the Gunners reach their second League final the following season against Luton Town. Despite Groves' appearances in all competitions this season, Brian Marwood's return to action limited his chances, and he was mostly used as a substitute in Arsenal's 1986–89 season, falling off the bench 15 times during the league campaign, out of six starts. In the last game of the season, he was on the field as a replacement and helped create the space when Michael Thomas scored the title clinching goal at Anfield.

Groves returned to the bench after Marwood recovered from an injury in 1989-90. This did not stop him from winning a second league champion's medal in 1990–91, although the majority of his appearances came as a sub, as Graham always preferred Kevin Campbell to play alongside Alan Smith. Groves was sold to Southampton after making only 13 appearances in 1991-92.

He went to Southampton in 1992 for £750,000 but he played 15 times in two years before retiring from professional football at the age of 28, following two serious Achilles tendon injuries.

He continued playing for Dagenham & Redbridge for four years before retiring from football with a single appearance for Canvey Island.

Man City won because they were always going to win, not because of the politics of envy or fear, writes OLIVER HOLT… Spurs fans can rest easy

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 14, 2024
OLIVER HOLT AT THE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM: The bird of night did not sit in the market-place at Seven Sisters at noonday, hooting and shrieking, nor did lions prowl the streets of our capital city, but there have, nevertheless, been strange disturbances in the natural order in the last 24 hours. Perry Groves, a former Arsenal star and scourge of their north London rivals, made plans to wear a Spurs shirt for the first time. Jamie O'Hara, a former Spurs player, said he would be supporting Spurs' opposition Manchester City, on Tuesday night. Spurs fans sang the City anthem, Blue Moon, on the radio. John, the taxi driver, a rabid Spurs fan, called TalkSport on Tuesday morning to insist it would be 'the biggest embarrassment ever' if his team beat City and handed the title to 'that lot down the road'.

Arsenal legend Perry Groves is blasted by a Tottenham fan for celebrating a Gunners goal in the home end while on commentary duty during North London Derby... as supporter claims he 'wants to report a hate crime'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 30, 2024
Arsenal legend Perry Groves has been slammed by a Tottenham fan after catching him celebrating a Gunners goal during their 3-2 win against their bitter rivals.  Spurs were handed an agonising defeat on Sunday afternoon as Mikel Arteta's men continued their march for a first title since 2004 thanks to an own goal by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz made it 3-0 in the first half.  Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min reduced the deficit but Ange Postecoglou's side left it too little too late  as they were consigned to a ninth defeat of the Premier League season.
