Peggy Lipton Life

Margaret Ann "Peggy" Lipton (August 30, 1946 – May 11, 2019) was an American actress, model, and singer.

She appeared in many of the most popular television shows of the 1960s before landing her leading role as flower child Julie Barnes (1968–1973), for which she received the Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Actress – Television Series Drama in 1970. Lipton married producer Quincy Jones and began a 15-year absence from acting, in which she raised her two children, Kidada and Rashida Jones, after The Mod Squad.

She returned to acting in 1988, including Norma Jennings in David Lynch's Twin Peaks.

Early life

Margaret Ann Lipton was born in New York City on August 30, 1946, the daughter of artist Rita Benson (born Rita Hetty Rosenberg) and corporate advocate Harold Lipton. Her paternal grandparents (surnamed Lipschitz) were Jewish immigrants from Russia, and her mother was born in Dublin, Ireland, to Jewish parents from Latvia. Lipton and her brothers, Robert, who became an actor, and Kenneth, were raised on Long Island, Rhode Island. She attended Lawrence Junior High School and the Professional Children's School. Lipton, a teen abused by an uncle, had a stutter so loud she was unable to pronounce her own name. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1964, where Lipton became known as a "Topanga Canyon hippie" who studied meditation and yoga.

Personal life

Lipton was briefly associated with Paul McCartney. She began using medications at age eighteen to try to ease her depression. Lipton's first marriage, aspirant producer Quincy Jones, in 1974, took a break from acting to concentrate on her family (with the exception of appearing in the made-for-TV film The Return of the Mod Squad in 1979). Kidada and Rashida, the couple's two children, were born in New Zealand. Lipton and Jones divorced in 1989 after being separated from Jones in 1986.
