Pauline Lettice Yates (16 June 1929 – January 2015) was an English actress best known for her appearances as Elizabeth Perrin in the BBC television sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.

She appeared in Bachelor Father and Keep It in the Family.

Personal life

In 1960, Yates married actor/writer Donald Churchill. Jemma and Polly had two children and lived in Primrose Hill, North London, for many years. After filming his last episode of El C.I.D., Donald Churchill died on set in 1991. Metcalf, the irascible harbour master, appeared on Granada Television. Jemma Churchill is also an actor, and Polly Churchill was a writer. Polly Churchill died in 2018 after a two-year relationship with Christopher Nichols, the widower of Francis Crick's youngest Daughter Jacqueline. Yates had three children.

Early life and career

On June 16, 1929, Yates was born in St Helens, Lancashire. After leaving Childwall Valley High School for Girls, she began her acting career by joining Oldham Rep. Straight. She made her stage debut in a dramatized version of Jane Eyre, playing Grace Poole at the age of 17.

After being cast on British television and also appeared in a few British films, Yates was cast in Estelle Waterman on Emergency Ward 10. She appeared on Armchair Theatre, Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars, Gideon's Way, Nightingale's Boys, "The Human Jungle," among other things. (She appeared in Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead, a comedy sketch show for radio that first appeared on BBC Radio 4 from February 15 to 1970.) She appeared as Mme Arnoux in Sentimental Education with Robert Powell in 1970. She appeared in Harriet's Back in Town, a Thames Television production in 1972. William Russell and Sally Bazely appeared on the program. She co-starred with Derek Nimmo in the short-lived sitcom My Honourable Mrs, in which she played Jane Prendergast, a housewife who is a Conservative MP like her husband Derek Prendergast (Derek Nimmo). In The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976–79), Yates was later cast as Elizabeth Perrin (1976–1996), as well as its sequel The Legacy of Reginald Perrin (1996).

Later life and career

Yates' ability as a comedy foil was further developed in the ITV sitcom Keep It In The Family (Thames, 1980-82), where she portrayed wife to the frustratingly eccentric comic-strip artist Dudley Rush (played by Robert Gillespie) that lasted for five series; Yates did not appear in the 1983 film; Yates did not appear in the 1983 series.

She appeared onstage in an Oxford Playhouse Company production of the Joe Orton play What the Butler Saw at the Teatr y Werin in Aberystwyth, Wales, with William Russell and Michael Barrington in the cast. She was the protagonist in Alan Ayckbourn's play Woman in Mind in 1987, which was also owned by the same group. In David Pownall's Leicester Haymarket stage version of Jane Austen's book Pride and Prejudice, which was directed by Bill Pryde in 1985, Yates appeared in Pride and Prejudice, directed by Bill Payne. In 1989, Yates appeared in the performance, comparing Angels to Angels at the Theatre Museum in London.
