He attracted considerable interest in Canada in 2008, when he wrote, co-produced, directed, and starred in the Genie Award-winning film Passchendaele, inspired by tales he heard from his grandfather, a First World War soldier. On September 4, 2008, the film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, when it also had the distinction of opening the festival. On its debut, the film received a mixed reaction. Despite this, it has received numerous awards, including Best Picture and the Golden Reel Award for Canada's top-grossing film of 2008. Paul Gross was honoured on March 2, 2009, for his film Passchendaele, which received the National Arts Centre Award for achievement over the previous year's success.

He appeared in a production of No.l Coward's Private Lives in Toronto from September 16, 2011 (the production lasted until October 30, 2011), and it closed on December 31, 2011. That year, he also produced Breakaway, starring Camilla Belle and Vinay Virmani.

Gross returned to Benton Fraser's role as he returned to the spotlight for the third season. He also served as executive producer and writer. He made an estimated salary of $23 million per season, and at the time, he was the highest-paid performer in Canadian television history. Several episodes of the series's last season were written by the author. "Gift of the Wheelman" and "All the Queen's Horses" are two of his favorites, while "Mounty on the Bounty" and "Call of the Wild" are of a similar style.
