Paul Chambers Life

Paul Laurence Dunbar Chambers, Jr. (April 22, 1935 – January 4, 1969), was a jazz double bassist.

His place in jazz bass development can not only be measured by his length of service in this short time, but also by impeccable timekeeping and intonation, as well as virtuosic improvisations.

He was also known for his bowed solos.

Chambers has released more than a dozen albums as a leader or co-leader, as a partner, and as the storyteller in trumpeter Miles Davis' "first great quintet" (1955–68) and with pianist Wynton Kelly (1963–68).

Personal life

Paul Chambers developed heroin and opium addictions over the course of his life. He was hospitalized at the end of 1968 with what was believed to be a severe case of influenza, but tests revealed that he had tuberculosis. Chambers lapsed into a coma for 18 days as his organ functions worsened. It is believed that his heroin and alcohol use contributed to his health problems. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 33 in 1969.
