Club career

Carlgren grew through the Samuelsdals IF's youth teams. He began his senior career with Falu FK, where he spent two years in the island. He appeared in IK Brage in Superettan for two seasons, making 23 appearances.

Carlgren was signed by AIK in July 2013. He made his Allsvenskan debut against Halmstads BK on May 8th.

Carlgren joined Danish Superliga team FC Nordsjlland in February 2017.

He signed a two-year contract with Konyaspor, Turkey's Süper Lig club.

Carlgren returned to Denmark on July 8th, 2018 to sign a three-year deal with Randers FC. Carlgren's contract with the club ran until 2024 in February 2021.

International career

Carlgren was part of the Swedish Under-21 Championship in 2015, saving Rigo Esgaio and William Carvalho in the penalty shootout in the final against Portugal after a 0–0 draw in Prague.

In November 2015, he was called up to the senior Sweden squad against Denmark in the UEFA Euro 2016 play-off. Carlgren was a squad member of Euro 2016 and spent time as a backup goalkeeper for Andreas Isaksson and Robin Olsen.
