Patrick Süskind (born 26 March 1949) is a German writer and screenwriter best known for his book Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, which was first published in 1985.
Early life
Süskind was born in Ambach, Bavaria. Wilhelm Emanuel Süskind, a writer and researcher who worked for the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and is best known as the co-author of Aus dem Wörterbuch Des Unmenschen (From the Dictionary of an Inhuman), a critical collection of essays on the language of the Nazi period. Patrick Süskind went to school in Holzhausen, a tiny Bavarian village. His mother worked as a sports coach, while his older brother Martin E. Süskind is also a writer. Süskind has several relatives from the aristocracy in Württemberg, making him one of the descendants of exectrophe Johann Albrecht Bengel and reformer Johannes Brenz.
He studied medieval and modern history at the University of Munich and in Aix-en-Provence from 1968 to 1974, but never graduated after doing qualifying tests for university and his compulsory community service. He and his parents were able to move to Paris, where he wrote "mainly short, unpublished fiction, and longer screenplays that weren't made into films."
