Patrick Timon Monahan (born February 28, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor best known as the lead singer and sole constant member of the band Train.

He has collaborated with many artists and has released Last of Seven, a solo album.

Early life

Monahan was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, as the son of Jack Monahan, a clothing store owner and singer, and Patricia Ann (née Timon) Monahan. He is the youngest of seven children in an Irish family and became an uncle at five. He attended McDowell High School in Millcreek Township. Monahan attended the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.

Personal life

Monahan has been married twice. While working in a bar called Sherlock's, he met his first wife, teacher Ginean Rapp. Patrick and Emelia were married in August 1990 and have two children together. They lived in Fairview Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and Petaluma, California, during their marriage. In 2006, Monahan and Rapp divorced.

During a show on May 14, 2004, Monahan met his second wife, Amber Peterson. They have two children together: Autumn and Rock Richard. They live in Issaquah, Washington.

Music career

Monahan began his musical career with cover band Rogues Gallery from 1988 to 1990. Monahan (lead vocals, percussion), Mark Emhoff (lead guitar, vocals), Mike Imboden (bass, keyboards, vocals), John McElhenny (drums, vocals), and his brother Matt (rhythm guitar, keyboards, and vocals) lived in Erie, Pennsylvania, Erie, Pennsylvania. He left Erie in late 1993 and headed to California, where he first met Rob Hotchkiss after the band's dissolution in late 1993. Monahan and Hotchkiss added Jimmy Stafford (guitar), Charlie Colin (bass), and Scott Underwood (drums) to their lineup, thus officially creating Train as he progressed from the SF coffeehouse circuit to the Los Angeles club scene, officially naming Train. Monahan recorded four studio albums with Train from 1994 to 2006. The band earned two Grammy Awards in 2002, one of which was for the song "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)", which was written by Monahan and inspired by his late mother, who had died of cancer.

Monahan performed additional vocals on the album "Shimmer" with the band Fuel in 2001, in addition to his Train work. He appeared on VH1's Decades Rock Live in November 2005, where he covered Cyndi Lauper's hit song "Time After Time." Later, he appeared in Storytellers – The Doors: A Celebration, ostensing The Doors by performing "Love Me Two Times."

Train went on a three-year absence from 2006 to 2009. On September 18, 2007, Monahan's first solo album, Last of Seven, was released, and he began a national tour to promote it. He continued his tour with a small, personal acoustic tour, which inspired his Last of Seven Acoustics, which is only available via digital download. "Her Eyes," his debut solo album, made it to the top of Billboard's Hot AC charts. "Two Ways to Say Goodbye" was the album's second single.

Monahan duets with folk rock musician Brandi Carlile on Last of Seven, with special guest appearances by Richie Sambora and Graham Nash. Monahan co-authored two songs for Tina Turner's hits album, Tina! She is one of the world's greatest hits.

Train returned to the studio in 2009 with the album Save Me San Francisco. In the CSI: NY episode "Second Chances," Monahan and some of his fellow Train bandmates appeared in small acting roles. Sam Baker, a former homeless drug addict played by Kim Kardashian), was the subject of a murder probe by Monahan. They performed "Hey, Soul Sister" from their latest album, as well as "Calling All Angels."

Despite the success of their latest album, Monahan took time to collaborate with other artists in other projects. As the Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2010, he performed with The Hollies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction service. On the album "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress," he performed lead vocals. He did a cover of Buddy Holly's "Maybe Baby" for the tribute album Listen to Me: Buddy Holly, which was released on September 6, 2011.

Monahan performed "Marry Me" with Martina McBride, a duet. This version of McBride's Eleven, McBride's eleventh studio album, was released on October 11, 2011. During 2011, he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and later at a concert in Chateau Ste Michelle. Monahan appeared on the programme "The Voice," where he performed "Drops of Jupiter" with contestant Vicci Martinez.

In 2013, he launched Patcast, a podcast in which he interviews various people in the music industry and shares information about Train.
