Patrick Demarchelier (born 21 August 1943) is a French fashion photographer.
Early life and education
Demarchelier, a born near Paris in 1943 to a modest family, spent his childhood in Le Havre, Normandy, with his mother and four brothers. His stepfather bought him his first Eastman Kodak camera for his seventeenth birthday. Demarchelier learned how to film, retouch negatives, and started photographing families and weddings.
Career
Demarchelier left Paris for New York City, United States, in 1975, to follow his girlfriend. He discovered fashion photography by working as a freelance photographer learning from, and being with photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Terry King, and Jacque Guilbert. Elle, Marie Claire, and 20 Ans Magazine all paid attention to his artwork. He is perhaps best known for his personal portraits of Princess Diana, which helped establish her fame and recognizable public image.
He worked with Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in September 1992, the first in a 12-year collaboration. Patrick Demarchelier photographed the front pages of nearly every major fashion publication, including American, British, and Paris Vogue. He shot covers for Rolling Stone, Glamour, Life, Newsweek, Elle, and Mademoiselle. He shot numerous commercial campaigns, including the Farrah Fawcett shampoo in 1978, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Cutty Sark in 1982, and a Calvin Klein ad with Talisa Soto and Giorgio Armani, Chanel, GAP, L'Oréal, Elizabeth Arden, Lancôme, and Gianfranco Ferré. Brooke Shields was also the primary photographer for the book On Your Own, a beauty/lifestyle book for young women. He worked with Harper's Bazaar from 1992 to become the country's top photographer. According to Demarchelier, the 2005 Pirelli Calendar was awarded to him. Laura Mercier, Jason Marks, and Pat McGrath all helped with the success of several make-up artists over the years.
