Georg Albert Ruthenberg (born August 5, 1959), also known as Pat Smear, is an American singer and actor.
He was a founding member of the Germs and was the touring guitarist for grunge band Nirvana from 1993 to 1994.
Dave Grohl, Nirvana's drummer, went on to be the frontman of rock band Foo Fighters; Smear soon joined on guitar and has since released five studio albums and a live album with the band.
Early life
Georg Ruthenberg was born and raised in West Los Angeles, California, by a mother of African-American and Native American descent as well as a migrant father. He began teaching himself piano lessons at a young age. He was a very religious child before becoming a musician, and at age 13 he left home to join a commune. He later attended Innovative Program School (IPS), an alternative school at University High School in Los Angeles. Darby Crash, a vocalist who would play in the Germs in the late 1970s, was there. Both Smear and Crash were banned from IPS due to allegations that they were inciting unruly conduct among the students.
Personal life
Smear was married at the time and had at least one child, according to the 2011 documentary Foo Fighters: Back and Forth.
Career
Joan Jett, Brian James, Brian May, and Steve Jones appear on Smear's influence as a result of his time as a teenager. He also said that "all the guitar playing" of John McKay on Siouxsie and the Banshees' first album "really inspired me" and that Yes guitarist Steve Howe is "the best guitarist ever." Smear and Darby Crash formed the Germs with bassist Lorna Doom and drummer Dottie Danger (the pseudonym of Belinda Carlisle, who went on to front The Go-Goos). Smear was the only member of the band with a bit of musical or technical expertise at the time. Smear said he didn't have a guitar but rather "borrowed from whatever we were playing with" for the bulk of his time in Germs.
Don Bolles was soon replaced by Carlisle, and the band's first album, GI), was released in 1979, by Joan Jett. "Smear has a lifetime of punk rock, with Smear earning accolades for his guitar work, but the album's star has no claim to being the album's star [alongside Darby], but it wasn't only did he co-write everything; rather, waste no time on something extraneous."
The Germs and Smear appeared in the punk film The Decline of Western Civilization (1981), produced by Penelope Spheeris. Darby Crash died before the film was released, resulting in the band's dissolution.
Smear played in 1981 with the ex-Screamers keyboardist Paul Roessler and his sister Kira Roessler in Twisted Roots, following the Germs' demise. Despite being short-lived, the band was the toast of the Hollywood punk scene. Smear will continue to perform with Nina Hagen and make two solo albums, Ruthensmear (also recorded with Roessler), and So You Fell in Love with a Musician.
He appeared in the television shows Quincy, M.E., during this period. Blade Runner, Breakin', and Howard the Duck were among the films on TV and CHiPs. Smear met Courtney Love while working on Breakin'. In addition to being an extra in Prince and the Revolution's single "Raspberry Beret"'s music video, he performed in front of Lisa Coleman's piano.
Smear appeared in deathrock 45 Grave briefly with Don Bolles (the former drummer for the Germs). Black Cross and other tracks were recorded during this period, and they would appear on 45 Grave's 1987 compilation album, Autopsy.
Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's frontman, called him in 1993 and asked him to join the band as a second guitarist for a forthcoming tour. Smear thought his brother, Carlos "Cake" Nunez, was pranking him at first; but, Courtney Love told Smear that Cobain would call him a few days before. On Saturday Night Live, Smear accepted immediately and appeared on his first show with Nirvana on September 25, 1993. He was on tour with Nirvana for about six months. Smear appeared on their live albums MTV Unplugged in New York, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah's T-shirts, as well as information for Nirvana and With the Lights Out and Live and Loud.
Following Cobain's death, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl formed a band to promote his self-titled album, which would later be known as Foo Fighters. Smear joined the company in late October 1994, but Smear did not appear on a Foo Fighters album until The Colour and the Shape (1997).
Smear left the band shortly after the debut of The Colour and the Shape. He resigned primarily due to exhaustion from the band's constant touring schedule, as Smear later explained. Smear's departure was also due to inner-band tensions that erupted around Grohl's separation from his first wife, Jennifer Youngblood, who was a close friend of Smear. Grohl begged" Smear to remain, and Smear decided to remain in Foo Fighters for the time being due to ongoing touring commitments, but not until a replacement guitarist could be available. Franz Stahl, his ex bandmate from Scream, was eventually recruited to fill the lead guitarist position by Grohl.
During a live performance at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, Smear announced his exit from Foo Fighters; he appeared on the set but then introduced Stahl, who completed the set.
During his time away from Foo Fighters, Smear maintained his low profile. He recorded Harlow's debut album and made some television appearances. He was employed as a creative consultant in a motion picture about the Germs and Darby Crash, titled after one of the band's most well-known songs. On June 23, 2007, the film was premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, but there was a limited theatrical release in 2008 and now available on DVD. Actor Rick Gonzalez portrays Smear in the film. He began appearing in reunion shows with the Germs in 2005, including actor Shane West, who portrays Darby Crash in the film, as the lead vocalist.
Smear appeared with Foo Fighters on select shows in late 2005. He continued to perform intermittently with the band, but not for the duration of a performance, until fully returning to the group in 2010 and being included on the recording of What Would Be The Light? On his 8th studio album, Sonic Highways, he went on to tour with the rest of the band.
Krist Novoselic, a former bandmate of Nirvana, joined his old bandmates Dave Grohl and Pat Smear on stage for the Foo's encore to honor late Kurt Cobain during the Foo Fighters' Friday night show at Bumbershoot Festival on August 29, 1997. Grohl performed on drums, Novoselic played bass, and Smear joined on guitar. Cobain, who died by suicide on April 5, 1994, was the subject of a microphone stand. After that a roadie for the Foo Fighters joined them on stage and sang a version of Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown," they produced a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain."
The remaining members of Nirvana danced together at Paladino's in Tarzana, California, on December 22, 2010, which was shot for a documentary.
Smear, Novoselic, and Grohl were all reunited again on December 12, 2012, for a televised Live Aid Hurricane Sandy benefit. They were fronted by Paul McCartney this time. They performed "Cut Me Some Slack," the first track from Sound City's film soundtrack.
On Saturday Night Live, they performed "Cut Me Some Slack" once more, this time fronted by McCartney.
During both the first and second encores of McCartney's "Out There" tour stop at Safeco Field, Seattle, Smear, Novoselic, and Grohl reunited on-stage, with Paul McCartney, on July 19, 2013. They performed "Cut Me Some Slack," as well as other Beatles' hits.
Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 11, 2014. Despite the fact that Smear was not drafted, he performed with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic on stage for Nirvana concerts with Joan Jett, Lorde, St. Vincent, and Kim Gordon.
On Saturday, October 6, 2018, the remaining Nirvana members reunited with John McCauley, Deer Tick's John McCauley, as well as Brody Dalle of The Distillers for a six-song encore set to close Cal Jam 18.
In 2021, Smear was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Foo Fighters. Dottie Danger, his former bandmate from The Germs (Belinda Carlisle), was inducted into The Go-Go's the same year as a member of The Go-Go's.
