Pat Roach Career

Sports career

Before becoming a professional as a protege of Jack Solomons, Roach boxed as an amateur.

Pat Roach, nicknamed "Judo" Pat Roach, began his professional wrestling career. Pat Roach, who had previously been referred to as "Big" Pat Roach before being welcomed with fond applause from the audience, continued to wrestle under the name of "Bomber" Pat Roach. He was conditioned by Alf Kent and his first official wrestling match against George Selko was held in 1960. At one time, Roach competed in both the British and European heavyweight championships at the same time.

Acting career

In Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Roach made his acting debut as the red-bearded bouncer in the Korova Milkbar. Barry Lyndon, a hand-to-hand brawler who fights Ryan O'Neal in a fist fight, appeared in another Kubrick film. Roach went on to play a number of strong-man supporting character roles in films in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, including the nonspeaking role of Hephaestus in Clash of the Titans.

Pat cameoed as a SPECTRE assassin in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again and as bandit-warlord Lord Brytag in the sword-and-sorcery film Red Sonja. In the film Willow, he appeared as the skull-helmeted General Kael; Conan the Destroyer; and as the Celtic chieftain in Robin Hood's Prince of Thieves.

In 1985, he appeared as Petty Officer Edgar Evans in the Central television series The Last Place on Earth about Captain Scott's journey to the South Pole. In Star Wars, Roach was turned down as Darth Vader; however, its producer, George Lucas, portrayed him as several burly villains in the Indiana Jones film series in the 1980s. He appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark two parts: the first being a massive Sherpa who fist fights Jones in the bar in Nepal, and the second being a German Luftwaffe mechanic who fistfights with Jones before being killed by an aircraft's propeller blades on the Egyptian airstrip. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom actress Roach played a Thuggee guard in a mine who fights with Jones before being killed in a rock crusher in the next film. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, his last appearance as a Gestapo officer was cut short because director Steven Spielberg thought the scene was "too long" and served as a subplot.

In the long running comedy-drama Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Roach played down to earth and easy going Brian "Bomber" Busbridge, but he was omitted from the final two-part Christmas special on television.
