Patrick Dennis Bowlen (February 18, 1944 – June 13, 2019) was the American majority owner of the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL).
The Bowlen family, as well as his two brothers John Bowlen and Bill Bowlen, as well as sister Marybeth Bowlen, purchased the team from Edgar Kaiser in 1984.
Bowlen served as the Broncos CEO from his inception and progression of Alzheimer's disease from 1984 to July 2014.
Early life
Bowlen was born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, to American mother Arvella (née Woods) and Canadian father Paul Dennis Bowlen, who became a millionaire in the Canadian oil industry, and mother Regent Drilling as a wildcatter. John, his brother's brother, now controls the oil company. Bowlen was a Catholic boy who spent his childhood in Alberta. He then attended Campion High School, a Catholic Jesuit boarding school in his hometown Wisconsin. Bowlen received degrees in commerce (1965) and law (1968) from the University of Oklahoma. He appeared for the Oklahoma Sooners freshman football team as well as the Edmonton Huskies junior football team, where he was a member of three Canadian Junior Football League Championship teams from 1962 to 1964.
In Edmonton, Alberta, the younger Bowlen became a wealthy advocate. Bowlen has worked as an executive for his father's business as well as a real estate developer, and has made substantial investments in the mining industry. Batoni-Bowlen Enterprises, Greg's building company in Edmonton, designed the Northlands Coliseum, which would be home to the WHA/NHL's Edmonton Oilers for 42 years.
Bowlen was an early member of the Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity. In 1963, the University of Oklahoma, Beta Omicron chapter, initiated bowlen. Bowlen was accepted in the Bar in 1969 and was a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association.
