www.popsugar.co.uk, April 26, 2023
The New York Times announced that Harry Belafonte, a beloved Hollywood actor, iconic singer, and a leading civil rights activist, died on Tuesday at his Upper West Side Manhattan home. He was 96 years old. Belafonte's longtime spokesperson, Ken Sunshine, confirmed the actor died of congestive heart disease, according to the outlet. Belafonte, one of the twentieth century's most influential entertainers, blazed trails for others Black artists alongside legends like Sidney Poitier. The actor rose to fame as one of Hollywood's first Black leading men, appearing in classic films such as 1954's "Carmen Jones" as well as many TV variety specials. Belafonte has also ventured into filmmaking, including 1959's "The World, the Flesh, and the Devil," as well as 1960's "Odds Against Tomorrow," which was also included in the heist film "Odds Against Tomorrow."
