Early life
VanZant was born in Dundee, Oregon, and raised in Dayton, Oregon, both near Portland. She was born in a dance studio and was taught dancing ballet, jazz, and hip hop for more than 13 years. She appeared in a Bissell ad as a teen. As a child, she was deemed a tomboy and adored the outdoors; her hobbies included riding dirt bikes and fishing. She was consistently bullied by a group of girls at high school. The bullying included mocking her surname Sletten, which students shortened to "sluggish." Because of continued bullying, she eventually changed her surname to VanZant. She chose "VanZant" because it was one of her mother's children's last names, and she liked the way it sounded. However, she has cited this experience as one of the reasons she loves being a martial artist and having the ability to defend herself.

Martial arts career
When VanZant and her family moved to Sparks, Nevada, she was looking for a dance studio when she discovered Ken Shamrock's gym, where she began training in boxing and other martial arts. VanZant made her professional MMA debut in Corpus Christi, Texas, winning by split decision after winning an amateur match at age 18, aged 18. She defeated Amber Stautzenberger at Premier Fight Series 2 on September 22, 2012 and won by unanimous vote.
VanZant faced Tecia Torres at Invicta FC 4: Esparza vs. Hyatt. On January 5, 2013, the festival was held at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. VanZant was dominated on the feet for a large portion of the war and lost to Torres by a unanimous decision.

At UFC Fight Night 170, VanZant was supposed to face Amanda Ribas on March 14, 2020. VanZant was forced to withdraw from the fight due to fracturing her right arm again (third time for VanZant). She said the injury was minor and that only took 6–8 weeks to recover. VanZant requested to cancel the match one month later, but Ribas agreed to stay at the game, and Randa Markos stepped in as the replacement. Ribas' match was postponed and took place at UFC 251 on July 12, 2020. In round one, VanZant lost the match by a postponement.
VanZant has signed a four-bout contract to compete exclusively in the Bare Knuckle Battle Championship, with a total prize in August of over $1 million.
VanZant made her BKFC: Knucklemania in Tampa, Florida, on February 5, 2021, against Britain Hart in the main event of BKFC: Knucklemania. She was disqualified by a majority decision in the case.

VanZant will join the company on March 4, according to AEW founder Tony Khan. On the March 9 episode of Dynamite, VanZant appeared alongside her husband Austin Vanderford. She attacked Tay Conti at ringside, disconcerting Sammy Guevara and assisting Scorpio Sky in winning the TNT Championships. VanZant signed her AEW deal on the top of Tay's body after the match. VanZant will make her in-ring debut at Double or Nothing on May 27 in Rampage's edition. VanZant's crew was victorious at the competition.
