Early life
Boateng was born in London's Muswell Hill district on February 28, 1967, the son of Ghanaian immigrants. He was inspired by his father's immaculate suits and he wore his first suit (a double-breasted outfit in purple mohair) from his mother at the age of eight. When he was 14, he turned sewn linings into suits. He was introduced to cutting and designing by his girlfriend while studying computer science at Southgate College at the age of 16. He began designing and selling to his classmates, then moved to graduate in fashion and design, using his mother's old sewing machine. He aided a friend make clothes for a fashion preview; after being lauded for his efforts, he sold his first collection to a Covent Garden menswear store. In 1987, some of his first pieces were also sold in Academy on Newburgh Street. In 1991, he opened his first studio in Portobello Road. He staged his first catwalk presentation at Paris Fashion Week in 1994, becoming the first tailor to host a catwalk show in Paris.
Personal life
Boateng was once married to Pascale, but the couple divorced at an unknown time. Gyunel Taylor, an Azerbaijani fashion model, was married later that year. Emilia and Oscar had two children before divorcing in 2009. Emilia is also a model.
"If you flow with history and don't fight with it, it becomes a dance," Boateng's mantra is.
Career
Boateng opened his boutique on Vigo Street, the south end of Savile Row, in 1995, after being mentored by Tommy Nutter.

Boateng was honoured with a major 20-year retrospective exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2005.
Boateng's new flagship store and headquarters were opened in 2008 at No. 1. 30 Savile Row, on the corner of Savile Row and Clifford Street. As of November 2019, the best store on this Mayfair street was co-designed by British-Ghanaian Architect David Adjaye. Khalid Fakhour, the Moroccan-born Bespoke boss, is the only Black-owned store on Savile Row as of November 2019, and has been running since 2010 by Moroccan-born Bespoke manager Khalid Fakhour. Boateng introduced a new line of fragrances for women in 2003. Bespoke is made up of two different vials of fragrance in an elongated, jewel-like bottle.
Boateng redesigned his flagship store on Savile Row in 2007, consolidating the company's corporate headquarters. Boateng also produces two ready-to-wear collections a year, produced at the former Chester Barrie factory in Crewe, Cheshire, in lieu of a bespoke service.
