The Albies began playing baseball at the age of six and moved to switch hitting in 2013. Albies was signed by the Atlanta Braves for $350,000 as an international free agent on July 2, 2013. The Braves' links to Andruw Jones and Andrelton Simmons, both of whom, like Albies, are natives of Curaçao, were responsible for his decision to sign. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Braves in 2014 and with the Danville Braves in July. Albies ran 446/.444/.444 with a home run in 57 games. He was ranked among the top 100 prospects in baseball by Keith Law in the first year of the season and fifth-best in the Braves farm system by Baseball America.

The Rome Braves opened the 2015 season with Albies. He was selected to the All Star Futures Game in July. He was the only Braves prospect to play in the game this season, as well as the youngest player on the field. Albies went 1-2 in the game, which the World Team lost 10–1. He fractured his right thumb in the first week of August and missed the remainder of the season. Albies failed.310/.368/.404/.404/.404, with 29 bases and committed 17 errors in 98 games. Albies remained in Mississippi following their promotion to the major leagues, with a.292 batting average and a.778 OPS between the Double A and Triple A teams. Mississippi made the Southern League playoffs, but Albies suffered his right elbow in the first postseason game and missed the remainder of the season.

At the start of the 2017 season, the Albies were again admitted to spring training. He was called up later this year and made his major league debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 1, 1991. Albies scored his first Major League home run against the Dodgers on August 3, 2017.

Albies was part of the Braves' Opening Day lineup to begin the 2018 season. Albies defeated the New York Mets 8–2 on June 12, 2018. Albies became the youngest player to win two grand slams in history. Albies' first walk-off home run against the Cincinnati Reds on June 25, 2018. Albies was named an All-Star by the player vote in his first full year in the major leagues on July 8, 2018, despite having a.281 batting average with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs. He played against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 11, his first multi-home run game in his career.

He batted.261/.452 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs in 2018. He made ten errors on defense, placing fourth in the majority of NL second basemen.

Albies signed a seven-year, $35 million contract to remain with the Braves on April 11, 2019. The agreement includes options for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. With a $4 million buyout, both years are worth $7 million.

He batted.295/.382/.500 in 2019, including 102 runs, 24 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 112 strikeouts. Ronald Acua Jr. and Freddie Freeman were named in the 2019 National League Silver Slugger Awards for second base, outfield, and first base, respectively, among Albies and teammates. He had the highest fielding percentage of all major league second basemen in 2019 (.994) on defense.

He batted.271/.404/.466 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic season.

Albies hit his 500th career in 2021, earning an RBI double off Washington Nationals reliever Sam Clay. Albies was selected as a reserve for the 2021 All-Star Game. The 2021 Atlanta Braves became the second team in Major League Baseball history to have starting infielders hit twenty-five home runs each as Albies celebrated their 20th home run of the season on September 4. Albies' thirtieth home run and one hundredth RBI of the season on September 22, the first time he has reached either record or milestone in his career. He was the first second baseman in Braves franchise history to reach 30 home runs and drove in one hundred runs in the same season. Albies scored his 100th run of the season while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies on September 29.

He batted 629 runs in 629 at bats (2nd in the NL), with 103 runs (4th), 7 triples (3rd), and 128 strikeouts in 2021 (13th). At 83 percent, he swung at a higher percentage of pitches in the strike zone than any other major leaguer. He led all second basemen with 389 assists and 8 errors, finishing fourth out of all NL second basemen on defense. The Braves had an 88-73 record, clinching the NL East, and later won the 2021 World Series, their first title since 1995. In a game against the Washington Nationals on June 13, 2022, Albies fractured his left foot. He was later put on the 60-day wounded list and underwent emergency surgery by Robert Anderson.
