Ox Baker Career

Professional wrestling career

Baker was educated by Buddy Austin, Pat O'Connor, and Bob Geigel, and debuted in 1964. He was winning a majority of his matches due to the Heart Punch's knockout; Stan Stasiak, from whom Baker banned the change, later renamed the Hurt Punch. Baker converted from a simpleton to a villain on his first appearance as a kind of horn-rimmed glasses-wearing nation simpleton. He was known for his unusual appearance, with his shaved head and black bushy mustache and eyebrows, as well as the ability to cut a promo. He was also known for wearing T-shirts to the ring, naming himself "The Great Heart Puncher" after the event.

In 1967 Baker was a member of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWF) as The Friendly Arkansas Ox. Baker teamed with Armand Hussein in a handicap match against Gorilla Monsoon in his first appearance there. Baker went on to compete in different North America, including Stampede Wrestling in Canada, the World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico, and the American Wrestling Association, which was headquartered in the 1970s. Baker and his partner the Claw were wrestling in an AWA Midwest Tag Team Championship tag team match against Alberto Torres and "Cowboy" Bob Ellis in Verdigre, Nebraska, on June 13, 1971. Torres died shortly after the match, with the cause determining heart disease as a result. This was turned on to Baker's Heart Punch, which was blamed on him for perpetuating Baker's wrestling heel persona. Baker lost to Ray Gunkel on August 1, 1972. Gunkel died after the match; his death has been traced to a blood clot, which led to a heart attack or simply heart disease. Baker's character was woven into Baker's life, and a riot erupted in Cleveland, Ohio, as Baker frequently Heart Punched his opponent Ernie Ladd after the match was concluded.

During his career, he defeated "Cowboy" Bob Ellis for the World Wrestling Association's World Heavyweight Championship in Indianapolis and Carlos Colon for the WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship in Puerto Rico's World Wrestling Council. Baker appeared with Central States Wrestling as a man and feuded with Rip Rogers late in his career.

He returned to the WWF in 1980 and was named The Grand Wizard as his manager. Baker appeared on television taping in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on March 25, but he was fired soon after and never wrestled for the WWF again.

Baker returned to the AWA in 1988. Baker worked with George Petraski, The Russian Brute of ICW fame, under a deal with The AWA via TRB Sports LLC. He retired from wrestling later this year. He began "Ox Baker's Wrestling School" in the following year, becoming a well-known trainer. His students include The Undertaker, Bryan Clark, and Ox Baker Jr. (Ronald Schell), as well as NWA New England Superstar The Dark Angel and his Kayfabe twin brother Micky Byggs of Wrestling Spotlite Radio/TV.
