Oskars Kalpaks Life

Oskars Kalpaks (6 January 1882–6 March 1919) was the commander of the 1st Latvian Independent Battalion, also known as "Kalpaks Battalion" in English. Kalpaks was born in a farming family.

He completed Irkutsk military school and then joined the 183rd Pultusk Infantry Regiment in 183rd.

During the First World War, he displayed his talent as a commander and hero in battle, winning the most coveted Russian military decorations and a rank Commander in 1917. Kalpaks was enlisted with the Ministry of Defence after the proclamation of Latvia's independence on November 18, 1918.

He arranged the defense of Vidzeme against Bolshevik attacks.

On December 31, Kalpaks became the Commander-in-Chief of all the deployed units at the Provisional Government of Latvia. Latvia's first infant divisions became warworthy under his leadership.

Kalpaks was given the rank of Colonel on February 28, 1919.

From January to March 1919, the 1st Latvian Battalion fought with the German VI Reserve Corps to repel the Bolshevik attacks into Kurzeme, marking the beginning of Latvia's independence struggle.

Kalpaks was killed in a skirmish with German Freikorps troops on March 6, 1919 near Airlines, mistakenly. Kalpaks was posthumously awarded the Order of Lacplesis, Latvia's highest military award, following his death. Despite never being specifically designated to any rank or position, Kalpaks is considered the first Commander in Chief of Latvian Armed Forces in 1937 and again in 2007.
