Omar Abdullah Career

Political career

In 1998, Omar Abdullah was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha, becoming the youngest member of the country at the age of 28. He served on both the Committee on Transportation and Tourism and the Ministry of Tourism's Consultative Committee from 1998 to 1999. He was elected to his 13th Lok Sabha (2nd term as a Member of Parliament) in 1999. He took the oath as Union Minister of State, Commerce, and Industry on October 13, 1999. He became the youngest Union Minister on July 22, 2001, when he was appointed Union Minister of State for External Affairs. On December 23, 2002, he resigned from the post to concentrate on party affairs.

He assumed the presidency of the National Conference party on June 23, 2002, replacing his father, Farooq Abdullah, who died on June 23. In the Kashmir assembly elections held in September–October 2002, he lost his seat as a Ganderbal. In 2006, Abdullah was re-elected as the president of the National Conference Party.

Much to the disapproval of the centre, Omar Abdullah had a one-on-one consultation with Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad in March 2006. This was the first meeting of a nature between a mainstream politician from Jammu & Kashmir and the Pakistani government, thereby reinforcing Omar's increasing commitment to the Jammu & Kashmir cause.

Omar made a speech during the 2008 Lok Sabha vote of confidence, which was applauded and gained him followers on the internet on July 22nd.

Following the 2008 Kashmir election, the National Conference gained the most seats and formed a coalition government with the Congress party, and Omar was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, raising concerns among the people of Jammu and Kashmir who had been reeling under brutality and violence triggered by cross-border terrorism since 1989.

Omar Abdullah was accused of concealing the rape and murder of two young women in Shopian, which was reportedly perpetrated by Indian Paramilitary Forces. Many regarded this as Abdullah's first failure, although some moderated it out.
