Early life

Olivia Palermo was born in New York City on February 28, 1986 and grew up on the Upper East Side and in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her father is a real estate developer, and her mother is an interior designer. Grant, she has a younger brother. Palermo attended primary school at Nightingale-Bamford School in Manhattan and the St. Luke's School in New Canaan, Connecticut. She studied at The American University of Paris and The New School. She is of Italian origin. Palermo was born with a learning disability. Palermo interned at Quest magazine. Patrick McMullan, a photographer, met her at an auction and took photographs of her around town. Palermo started participating in the charitable events in New York, becoming a member of the Friends Committee of New Yorkers For Children and joining Operation Smile's committee.

Palermo began her career as a member of MTV's television show The City. The series lasted for two seasons from 2008 to 2010, focusing on the personal and professional lives of many young women in New York City. Palermo worked with Diane von Fürstenberg and then in Elle magazine's accessories department.

Palermo joined the talent company Wilhelmina International Inc. in 2009 to concentrate solely on the brand's growth. She became a guest editor on Project Runway Season 9 as a guest judge. Palermo modeled for Mango and Hogan's Autumn/Winter promotions in 2010. Palermo's personal website, which features editorial content about fashion, beauty, and lifestyle written by full-time writers and contributing editors, was launched in October 2011. She created a line of sunglasses for American brand Westward Leaning in 2014, and a part of each sale went to support the Association for Creation, Alternative Commerce, and Microcredit's Masaai Project. Palermo also collaborated with Italian shoe manufacturer Aquazzura on a line of footwear in 2014.

Palermo collaborated on collections with luxury leather and accessories brand Aspinal of London, the American jewelry and accessories brand Baublebar, and makeup firm Ciaté London in 2015. Palermo's collaboration with Ciaté included a line of makeup and nail polish, one of which was inspired by her mother's shade. She began with Nordstrom on a fashion line in 2016 and with Banana Republic in 2017. Palermo collaborated with Meli Melo on a collection called Severine in 2017. The London brand, which is known for its high-quality materials and craftsmanship, collaborated with Palermo to create a sleek twist on a bucket bag. The bag, which came in five shades, was modeled after late architect and artist Max Bill's sculptural works.

Palermo was appointed as the brand ambassador for Pikolinos' 2013 and 2014 Maasai Projects. Banana Republic's first Women's Global Style Ambassador, Palermo, was named in September 2016 as the brand's first Women's Global Style Ambassador until 2017.
