Olivia Rose Olson (born May 21, 1992) is an American actress and singer-songwriter best known for her voice appearances as Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb and Marceline the Vampire Queen in Adventure Time.

She also appeared in Love Actually's 2003 film Love Actually and its 2017 short sequel Red Nose Day Actually. Olson is also a writer, contributing to the Adventure Time Encyclopedia and a forthcoming book for Cartoon Network.

Early life

Olson was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and has been adopted at a young age. Martin Olson, mother Kay Olson, and brother Casey Olson live together. In 2010, Olson graduated from Agoura High School. She is of Afro-Jamaican descent through her biological father.

Olson has appeared on television shows and in live theatre, including Comedy Central Stage, the HBO Theater, and The Fake Gallery.

With her role as Joanna Anderson in the 2003 holiday film Love Actually, Olson began to perform. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" was the song. Her singing was praised, with producer Richard Curtis stating in the Love Actually DVD's commentary that Olson's singing was so convincing that they were afraid the audience would not believe she could sing the way she did, and that she should assume she was lip-synching to Mariah Carey's voice. They had to prepare her so that her singing would be more convincing, and they'd have to include the sounds of inhalation. As a result, guest appearances on The Ellen Show, The Tracy Morgan Show, and singing with stars Jack Black and Kristin Chenoweth, as a guest. Olson also posted original songs on her YouTube page. Olson reprised her role as Joanna in Red Nose Day Exactly, a short film that is a sequel to Love Actually.

Vanessa Doofenshmirtz, a recurring character in Phineas and Ferb, appeared alongside actor Thomas Sangster (Ferb Fletcher), who portrayed Joanna's love interest Sam in Love Actually from 2008 to 2015. Olson said that she and Sangster discussed "the whole Ferb-Vanessa situation" because it's "comedic."

She appears on Phineas and Ferb, including the duet "Busted!" Ashley Tisdale performs in many popular solo albums, including "I'm Me," "Not So Bad a Dad," "I'm Lindana and I Want Fun," "Happy New Year," and others, as well as her song in the Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation collection "Got That Christmas Feeling." Olson's father wrote "over 200 songs for the series" and several episodes, and she has written and performed her own songs with renowned music producers Rick Nowels, Camara Kambon, and Hollywood jazz great Rob Mullins. In Adventure Time, Vanessa's role as Vanessa led to her role as Marceline the Vampire Queen. Pendleton Ward, the show's creator, contacted Olson's father, Martin Olson, and wrote for Phineas and Ferb, asking if he knew who played Vanessa in the show during its run. Martin was not aware, at the time, that he was Olson's father. Marceline will also appear in Adventure Time: Hey Ice King, a 2012 video game.

Olson appeared in Marceline the Vampire Queen in the animated Cartoon Network series Adventure Time in 2010. Olson said she was impressed by her character's fashion style and costuming for Marceline, adding that she occasionally admired the character's unique designs. Olson first read for Princess Bubblegum during the audition, but later read about Marceline. When getting into character for the role, she looked like Marceline when she recorded her lines In the film, Hunson Abadeer, Marceline's father, appeared on the show. Marceline's songs, which were written by storyboard artists or other people involved with production, were also included in the series. As such, The Guardian praised Marceline as a character, noting in particular that "she's... responsible for some of the show's best songs."

The series was a commercial and popular success, and her character attracted critical and admiration from critics and followers alike, as well as the Adventure Time production crew. Olson performs "Everything Stays," which was introduced by Olson and Rebecca Sugar at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con. In 2015, Olivia and her father, Martin Olson, co-authored an article based on the series Adventure Time: The Enchiridion & Marcy's Super Secret Scrapbook. Olivia wrote her first person as her character Marceline. Mahendra Singh, Tony Millionaire, Renee French, Celeste Moreno, and Sean Tejaratchi illustrated the book.

"Haven't You Noticed (I'm a Star)" by Olson on September 17, 2015, one of Steven Universe's "Sadie's Song" was also performed by him. It was later featured in Steven Universe mini-episode "Gem Karaoke" and was released on October 3, 2016. She appears at comic-Cons and pop conventions around the world, as do other Adventure Time cast members.

Olson's YouTube and TikTok accounts are often posted original music. Olson's debut EP Beauty Is Chaos was released on July 18, 2013. She had over 19,000 followers on her YouTube channel by December 2015.

Olivia appeared on Cartoon Network's reboot of The Powerpuff Girls from 2016 to 2019, some viewers were outraged, but more optimistic voices emerged as news began to spread that the character would be black. The character was described as a giant leap forward in terms of racial diversity and a worthy addition later on. Overall, reactions to the character were mostly positive, with others suggesting she was a stereotype and that including the character would encourage tokenism.

In 2019, Olson voiced Jun, PizzaRave, and another character from Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. In the Phineas and Ferb film "Nerb Film, Vanessa Doofenshmirtz" episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, she played Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in the Phineas and Ferb film Phineas and Ferb: Peteras and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe and Marceline. Olson sang "The Universe Is Against Me" with Ashley Tisdale, who played Candace and Laura Dickinson, and while in "Obsidian," she performed "Woke Up" and "Monster" with other artists.

Nowhere Land, Olson's new album, was announced on June 22, 2018. She worked with producer/singer/songwriter John Defeo and producer/singer/songwriter Kairos Music Group on the project. She started competing in The X Factor: Celebrity in October 2019, becoming the second act to be barred from the live shows on October 26, 2019.
