After his single "When I'm Down" went viral, he signed to Atlantic Records in 2017.

Oliver Tree Nickell was born in Santa Cruz, California, where he was also raised on June 29, 1993. He has said he took "piano lessons at three years old [began] songwriting the next year, and [had] an album published by age six," he said.

Tree studied music at San Francisco State University for two years and Music Technology at the California Institute of the Arts.

In 2010, Oliver began his solo recording career as "Tree." By then, he had given speeches for shows such as Skrillex and Zeds Dead. He started self-releasing his music, but R&S Records signed him in 2011. Irony, a ska band, was his first time playing. He sang and played guitar. Tree performed dubstep for a brief period of time and appeared at festivals like Wobbleland 2011 in San Francisco. He appeared at openings for bands such as Tyler, the Creator, Nero, and Frank Ocean, as well as Tree, a pseudonym.

Tree, a young boy from London, has signed to R&S Records and has released Demons, his first EP. After Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke approved of their song "Karma Police," the EP gained some attention. Tree eventually returned to school, studying music technology at the California Institute of the Arts, but found himself on hiatus.

With his television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly, he returned to music in November 2016.

Tree signed to Atlantic Records a month after the film "When I'm Down," and a month later, graduated from the California Institute of the Arts.

Tree writes, appears, and directs sketches in comedy films, and has worked with companies like Fuck Jerry.

Tree's debut EP, Alien Boy, was released in February 2018, as well as the double music video for "All That x Alien Boy." Tree wrote and directed the debut, which took over nine months to produce. He spent five months at Perris Auto Speedway doing all his stunts in the music video.

Oliver Tree has appeared at major festivals such as Lollapalooza and Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, as well as at Coachella, where he was first recognized on "The Best (and Weirdest) Fashion at Coachella" in 2017.

Are You OK? is a support act on Louis the Child's 2017 Last to Leave Tour and Skizzy Mars' Are You OK? Tour (2018), and I was supposed to accompany Lil Dicky and DJ Mustard on the Life Lessons Tour in Fall 2018, but it was cancelled. Hobo Johnson and Tree toured North America and Europe in 2018.

Tree released singles from 2018 and 2019 that would appear on his debut album, Ugly Is Beautiful. Tree's second music video, "Hurt," a single from the album, was released on December 7, 2018. He travelled to Ukraine to film the film, which he co-directed with Brendan Vaughan, an up-and-coming music video producer. The music video for "Hurt" reached one million views in the first week, in the first week, although the song received significant radio exposure. Tree released "Fuck" as a single on April 11, 2019, the music video was also posted on the same day.

On the first day of release, James' fourth music video and single, "Miracle Man," was released. Do You Feel Me? Tree's second EP, Do You Feel Me? The book was widely praised on August 2, 2019.

Tree released "Cash Machine" on December 6, 2019, followed by a music video. Tree also announced that the album, Ugly Is Beautiful, will be released on March 27, 2020, as part of the single. Tree wrote a note on his Twitter page on March 25, 2020, announcing that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ugly Is Beautiful will not be released on time. However, the album's official launch date was set to be June 12.

Tree set a Guinness World Record for the world's biggest kick scooter on May 16, 2020, which he later posted a video of himself riding on July 17, 2020.

Tree announced on June 8, 2020, that he had decided to postpone Ugly Is Beautiful once more, this time to July 17. He said that, despite the uproar surrounding the murder of George Floyd, he "did not think" that the album was released at a time when "much bigger things" deserved attention. Ugly Is Beautiful was launched on July 17, 2020.

Despite claiming that he was resigned, he issued the single "Out of Ordinary" on February 4, 2021, announcing the deluxe version of Ugly Is Beautiful.

Tree published a deluxe version of his debut album, Ugly Is Beautiful: Shorter, Thicker & Uglier, on May 28, 2021.

He would later perform with Russian rave band Little Big and record the single "Take It Up" from their joint EP Welcome to the Internet, which was released on September 30, 2021.

Tree's second album Cowboy Tears, released the single "Cowboys Don't Cry" on January 12, 2022. Cowboy Tears was introduced on February 18, 2022. Tree's "I Hate You" and "Cowboys Don't Cry" were released on May 20, 2022. He also confirmed a tour to support the album Cowboy Tears.
