Olga Lehmann (born in 1912) was a Chilean-born British visual artist who died on October 26, 2001.

Early life

Olga Lehmann, born in Catemu, Chile, to Mary Grisel Lehmann (née Bissett) and mining engineer Andrew William Lehmann, Olga Lehmann. Monica (Monica Pidgeon) and one brother, George (Andrew George Lehmann). Her father was of German and French descent (born in Paris), and her mother was Scottish. She was educated at Santiago College and then moved to England in 1929, where she was given a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, London University.

She studied fine art under Henry Tonks and Randolph Schwabe's tutelage, as well as portraiture under Allan Gwynne-Jones, specializing in theatrical design under Vladimir Polunin. She was granted awards for life painting, composition, and theater design in the early thirties, and Spanish and Moorish themes were later reflected in her artwork.

Olga Lehmann Career

Career

Her creative career as an artist spanned nearly six decades, from the 1930s to the 1980s. She developed a reputation in the fields of mural painting and portraiture during the 1930s and 1940s. She exhibited her work at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1933 and 1935, as well as with the London Group in 1935. Later sitters of note included people associated with film or recording industries, such as actor Edric Connor, Carmen Prietto, conductor Richard Austin, and actor Dirk Bogarde and Patrice Wymore. Her studio-flat in Hampstead was destroyed by a fire during the Blitz in 1940, and a lot of her early work was lost.

Her name became synonymous with graphic design for the Radio Times and film and television production after World War II. She married Edward Richard Huson, a writer and editor who had one son, author and television journalist Paul Huson, in 1939. She was predeceased by her husband in 1984 and 2001, and she died in Saffron Walden, Essex.
