Oka Antara (born Nyoman Wisnupada Antara) is a Balinese actor of Balinese descent.

He is best known for his roles in Sang Penari (2011), V/H/2 (2013), Killers (2014), and The Raid 2 (2014).

Personal life

Oka married Rara Wiritanaya, a Bali TV presenter, on July 7, 2008. They held a private wedding reception at home in Karangasem, Bali. The couple have three children.

He hails from a tolerant yet conservative Balinese Hindu family. Despite his faith and family history, he appears in Islamic films and soap operas often. Due to this, an accidental occurrence involving him where an official mistakenly record his faith as Islam rather than Hindu, triggering a religious conversion rumor and a shocked reaction from his family. Since his clarification, the allegation had been disregarded.

He is a silat and kickboxing specialist. His talents in these sports have helped him land a role in Indonesian action films.

Life and career

Antara was born in Jakarta on July 8, 1981. He is of Balinese descent. With Gue Kapok Jatuh Cinta, Antara made his film debut in 2005 (I Give Up on Falling in Love). Thomas Nawilis, one of the film's writers, asked him to write the film's soundtrack; Antara did so, and sang a duet with Sabria Kono titled "So Special" for the film. Antara began acting after the film's success. He played in Dunia Mereka (Their World) in 2006 and the following year he was in Hantu (Ghost).

He appeared in Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love), a Hanung Bramantyo film, in 2008; his role earned him a Citra Award nomination at the Indonesian Film Festival. He appeared in another Bramantyo film, Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (Woman with a Turban), in which he found the script very amusing, citing it as his reason for joining the cast. At the 2009 Bandung Film Festival, his work earned him the award for Best Supporting Actor. Fajar Nugroho directed Queen Bee in the same year as he served as a member of the Presidential Protection Squad. He researched the squad's role from books and sought out instruction from a real-life member for the position.

Antara also received another Best Actor award, this time at the Indonesian Movie Awards for his role in 2010's Hari Untuk Amanda (Days for Amanda), which earned him a nomination for the Citra Award for Best Leading Actor. Kompas wrote a film scenario after being prompted to act.

Producer Shanty Harmayn approached Antara in 2011 for the leading role of Rasus in Ifa Isfansyah's film Sang Penari (The Dancer). Antara cut back on his food intake while preparing for his role as a hungry young man; later, he was tempted to play Rasus as a soldier. His portrayal earned him a Citra Award nomination for Best Actor, but he lost to Emir Mahira of Rumah Tanpa Jendela (House Without Windows).
