Nikos Zisis Life

Nikolaos "Nikos" Zisis (born August 16, 1983) is a Greek professional basketball player for Joventut Badalona of the Spanish Liga ACB.

At a height of 1.97 m (6'5?3/4"), he appears in both the point guard and shooting guard positions. Zisis won the 2008 EuroLeague championship while a member of CSKA Moscow during his senior men's playing career.

Zisis has also won nine national league championships in various European domestic leagues (four Italian League titles, two Russian League titles, two German League titles, and one Greek League championship).

In addition to that, he has won 8 national cup championships (four Italian cups, two German cups, one Russian Cup, and one Greek Cup).

XAN Thessaloniki and Brose Bamberg, two members of his club, have retired their team jerseys. Zisis earned the gold medal at the 2005 EuroBasket, the silver medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and the bronze medal at the 2009 EuroBasket as a member of the senior Greek national basketball team.

Early years

Zisis began playing basketball in 1996 and spent time with the Xan Thessaloniki junior team (English: YMCA Thessaloniki). He was with the team until 2000. In 2018, the club would go on to resign his jersey.

Personal life

Zisis is a close friend of Greece's national basketball team player Vassilis Spanoulis, and he has a good friend with Italy national basketball team player Andrea Bargnani. Vassilis Spanoulis, the man who married Fani Skoufi in 2010, was his best man. His nickname is "The Lord of the Rings."

Nikos Zisis Career

Professional career

Zisis migrated to Athens, where he joined Team AEK, where he started his professional basketball career at the age of 17. He won the Greek Cup in 2001 and then the Greek League championship in 2002. In 2002, he received the Greek League Best Young Player award.

He then moved to Treviso, Italy, and competed on Benetton Treviso, Italy's national team. In the year 2006, Treviso won the Italian Super Cup and the Italian League championship, as well as the Italian Cup in 2007. He left Italy and went to Moscow, Russia, where he then migrated to Italy.

He signed a three-year deal with the Russian team CSKA Moscow worth €5 million net income on June 13, 2007. Zisis won the EuroLeague championship in 2008 with CSKA. In 2009, he left CSKA and signed a two-year deal with Montepaschi Siena, generating €1.6 million euros net income. He signed a two-year contract with Montepaschi in 2010.

He signed a two-year deal with Bilbao in 2012, with the second year being an option year. In July 2013, he joined UNICS Kazan, the Russian VTB United League team.

Fenerbahçe ülker, a Turkish League club, acquired Zisis on December 29, 2014. Fenerbahçe reached the 2015 EuroLeague Final Four with Zisis playing 24.4 minutes per game. It was the first time in the team's history that they made it to the EuroLeague Final Four. However, they lost in the EuroLeague semifinals to Real Madrid by a score of 87–96 on May 15, 2015.

Zisis signed a two-year deal with Brose Bamberg, Germany's national Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) club Brose Bamberg on July 16, 2015. In 2017, he extended his Brose deal until the year 2019. (2016, 2017) and two German Cups (2017, 2019) with Bamberg. Zisis won the 2019 German Cup Final, beating Albion by 2.4 seconds left in the game, giving Bamberg a 83–82 victory over Alba Berlin.

Bamberg retired Zisis' number 6 jersey on September 7, 2019.

Zisis joined Joventut Badalona, a Spanish Liga ACB club, on July 15, 2019.

National team career

Zisis gained the silver medal at the 1999 FIBA Under-16 European Championship, as well as leading the tournament in scoring. At the 2000 FIBA Under-18 European Championships, he also won the bronze medal. At the 2001 Tunis Mediterranean Games, Zisis competed with Greece's under-26 national team. He helped Greece win the silver medal at the tournament during the 2001 Mediterranean Games. In addition, Zisis earned gold medal with the Greek under-20 national team at the 2002 FIBA Under-20 European Championship, where he was also named the tournament's MVP.

Zisis earned the gold medal at the 2005 EuroBasket, which was held in Serbia and Montenegro as a member of Greece's national basketball team. He was Greece's top scorer in the tournament, averaging 10.6 points per game. Zisis controlled the length of the court, drew a double team, and then dismantled the ball out to Dimitris Diamantidis, who scored a game-winning 3 pointer, at the end of his semifinal match against France's national basketball team. Zisis was named as the best FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year after his stellar appearance at the EuroBasket in 2005.

Zisis scored a game-winning 3-point shot at the end of the game against the Australian national basketball team, giving Greece a 72–69 win. However, Anderson Varejo of Brazil was struck on the cheekbone and eye socket bone by the elbow in his next game in the tournament. Zisis sustained a serious facial injury, requiring him to miss the remainder of the 2006 World Championship as a result of surgery. Despite losing Zisis, Greece's top scorer a year before at the 2005 EuroBasket, they were still able to win the silver medal (which also included an unexpected surprise victory over Team USA in the semifinals) during the World Championship tournament.

Zisis was one of the two key Greek players, alongside Theo Papaloukas, that led Greece's national team to the largest comeback in the EuroBasket's history against the Slovenian national basketball team at the 2007 EuroBasket. The comeback was described as "the miracle." Greece finished fourth in the tournament, in 4th place.

Zisis has also competed with Greece at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where Greece finished fifth in the world, and at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where Greece finished fifth, where Greece also finished in 5th position. He appeared in the following tournaments: the 2009 EuroBasket, where he earned a bronze medal, the 2010 FIBA World Championship, the 2011 EuroBasket, the 2014 FIBA World Championship, and the 2015 EuroBasket.

Zisis was honored by the Hellenic Basketball Federation in 2019 for his contributions to the Greek men's national basketball team, with whom he gained 189 caps (games played).
