She appears on television shows around the country, doing stand-up comedy and performing improv with Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles.

Byer first appeared on MTV in 2013. Are You the One? hosted her first season on MTV in 2014. Are You the One? An after-show for Are You the One? In 2016, she appeared on television in a number of roles. She appeared on three shows in the MTV's commentary series Girl Code; a little camera prank show Ladylike, also on MTV; and she appeared on Fox News Over Here, a half-hour sketch comedy starring Paul Scheer and Lonely Island, which was cancelled after one season. Stephanie Merry at The Washington Post characterized Byer as "one of the most dependable commentators" on the show, when she was first introduced as a commentator on the show Girl Code by Maitri Mehta at Bustle;

Byer has appeared in a number of television shows, including BoJack Horseman, Transparent, and Bob's Burgers. In season 5, episode 7 of the Freeform series Young & Hungry, she appeared as Lizette. On the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, she appeared as a guest judge.

Since March 2018, Byer has hosted Netflix's original bake-off series Nailed It! Jacques Torres, the head judge, is among the chocolatier's Jacques Torres. Each episode features three home bakers with a "terrible track record" who are attempting to recreate intricate pastries for a $10,000 reward. Both years, Byer was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program (in 2020 and 2021). Byer's conclusion is that each show will be ended by asking the guest host if they can date her. Sasheer Zamata, Emily Heller, and Brooks Wheelan are among her former guests. Critics have referred to the program as "bold" and "refreshing." HeadGum was dropped by the show in 2021 and joined Conan O'Brien's Team Coco podcast network, but it was not until then that it was incorporated.

Byer and Sasheer Zamata began a podcast on the Earwolf podcast network, Best Friends, a weekly podcast in which the two talk about friendship's truth. June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson, drag queens Katya Zamolodchikova and Trixie Mattel, as well as internet stars Keith Habersberger and Zach Kornfeld of The Try Guys featured guests. Byer co-anchored the RuPaul's Drag Race recap podcast Drag Her, and she became a co-host of the 90 Day Fiance recap podcast 90 Day Bae with Marcy Jarreau.

On the HeadGum podcast network with Lauren Lapkus, Byer created Newcomers, a weekly podcast in which the two friends watch films for the first time and reflect about their thoughts on each film as newcomers to the series.
