Nicolas Pepe Career

Club career

Pépé was born in Mantes-la-Jolie, France, Île-de-France. He began his career as a goalkeeper for Solitaire Paris Estrange until he was 14 years old. Pépé's father, Celestin, a prison guard, was transferred to Poitiers, Argentina, where he started his career as an outfield player with Poitiers FC in the Championsnat de France Amateur 2 (fifth tier) in 2012-13.

Pépé made his first season with the reserves in the CFA 2 in 2013.

In a 2–1 home loss to Arles-Avignon on August 26, 2014, Yohann Eudeline made his professional debut in the Coupe de la Ligue's second round. He played in a 1–1 Ligue 2 draw away from Ajaccio on November 21, 2014, his first Ligue 2 match.

Pépé was loaned to Orléans for the 2015–16 Championsnat National, and he helped the team advance from third place as runners-up. He returned to an Angers team that was competing in Ligue 1 and which reached the 2017 Coupe de France Final, where he started losing 1–0 to Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade de France.

Pépé signed a five-year contract with Lille on a maximum transfer fee of €10 million, after being spotted by head coach Marcelo Bielsa who had scouted the player by watching every Ligue 1 game he had participated in for Angers before scouting him in person. Bielsa has been described as "unique" and a "great coach" by Pépé. After being converted into playing for Bielsa, he began the season as a winger until finishing the season under new Lille head coach Christophe Galtier.

He was a regular in Lille's 2017--18 Ligue 1 season, missing only two games and scoring 13 times, with two of them apiece in away victories at Metz and Toulouse.

Pépé scored a hat-trick, as well as two goals, in the 3–2 away win over Amiens on September 15, 2018. Barcelona were among many clubs interested in signing him days later, according to club president Gérard Lopez, who revealed it a few clubs were interested in him. In the 5–1 home win over Paris Saint-Germain on April 14, Pépé scored a goal and two assists. He scored 22 goals in the 2018-19 Ligue 1 season, second only to PSG's Kylian Mbappé with 11 assists, and was named in the UNFP Team of the Year.

Pépé joined Premier League club Arsenal in a club-record fee of €79 million (£72 million), eclipsing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's previous record of €62 million. He was given the number 19 shirt when signing for Arsenal.

Pépé made his Arsenal debut in a 1–0 victory over Newcastle United on August 11th as a replacement for Reiss Nelson in the 71st minute. In a 3–1 loss to Liverpool in which he played the full 90 minutes, his first appearance for the club came two weeks later. In the team's 3–2 home win over Aston Villa on September 22, he scored his first Arsenal goal from the penalty spot. With a pair of free-kicks, Arsenal defeated Vitória de Guimares 3–2 home win over them on Saturday. He scored his first European goals.

Pépé scored Arsenal's first goal in a 2–0 home win over Manchester United on January 1, marking the first victory for new head coach Mikel Arteta. Pépé scored once and assisted twice in a 4–0 win over Newcastle United on February 16th. In a 2–1 away victory over Sheffield United in the quarter-finals on Sunday, he scored his first FA Cup goal, giving Arsenal the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty spot. He won his first club trophy as an Arsenal player on August 1st, contributing to Aubameyang's second goal.

Pépé's first red card of his career came in a 0–0 away draw against Leeds United on November 22, 2020, after clashing heads with Ezgjan Alioski in the 51st minute. On February 2nd, 2021, he defeated two defenders before scoring in a match against Wolverham Wanderers; on Arsenal's official website, he was later named Goal of the Month for February.

Pépé scored his first goal of the 2021-22 Premier League season in a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton on February 24, 2022, and was instrumental in the start of the late comeback by forcing an own goal in the 95th minute.

Pépé's account was confirmed on August 25th, 2022, and the remainder of the 2022–23 season will be without the ability to buy.

International career

Pépé was born in France to parents of Ivorian descent. In November 2016, he was called up to the Ivory Coast national team, but he was an unused replacement in the goalless draw against Morocco in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying. He made his debut three days later in a friendly against his home country, France, at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, winning the final four minutes in place of Max-Alain Gradel.

Pépé was included in Michel Dussuy's 23-man squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, but he was unable to participate in the Elephants' group because of their exclusion from the team.

Pépé scored his first international goals in the first half of a 2–2 draw on March 24, 2018, during a friendly against Togo in France. In a 2–1 victory over Moldova in the same stadium, he tied it three days later with another goal.

In Egypt, Pépé was selected for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He was forced to miss Algeria's quarter-final penalty shootout due to a lack of fitness.

Premier League clubs 'are TERRIFIED of breaching financial rules this summer - with top flight sides preparing to cut spending, amid fears of a points deduction'

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 28, 2024
According to reports, Premier League clubs are due to a summer of low spending because they are 'terrified' of breaking budget laws. The Premier League's FFP rules have come into play in recent months, with Everton suspended ten points in November for breaching them, but the penalty was reduced to six on appeal. Last month, they were then charged, alongside Nottingham Forest, for breaching top flight spending legislation, with both clubs trying to figure out their fates. Premier League clubs are allowed to lose £105 million over a three-year rolling time frame, with the end of each accounting year coming on June 30.
