Nicholas Victor Leslie Henson, born in May 1945 to December 15, 2019 was a British actor.

Early life

Nicholas Victor Leslie Henson was born in London, the son of Harriet Martha (née Collins) and comedian Leslie Henson. Adam Henson, a farmer and regular host on BBC TV's Countryfile, is Nicky's uncle. Joe Henson, Nicky's brother, is a producer.

He attended St. Bede's Prep School, Eastbourne, and the Charterhouse in Godalming. He began to work as a stage manager in RADA and performed as a guitarist first. In Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, he played Pozzo as a member of the Young Vic Company.

Personal life

Henson married actress Una Stubbs (who in turn appeared in EastEnders as his sister-in-law Caroline Bishop). Joe and Christian, both of whom are composers, had two sons. Henson's marriage ended in 1974 with actress Susan Hampshire, his co-star in numerous stage productions.

He then married ballerina Marguerite Porter, by whom he had a third son, Keaton, a composer and illustrator, and illustrator.

In 2003, Henson was diagnosed with cancer. Surgeons removed tumours from his spleen, but a routine check-up in 2006 revealed that other tumors had enlarged and it would be risky to remove them. Henson was put on chemotherapy and continued to raise funds for cancer charities, particularly Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He died on December 15, 2019 from cancer, at the age of 74.

Henson appeared on television shows including guest appearances in Fawlty Towers, Minder, Boon, Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, After You've Gone, Lovejoy, and Doctors. When Shine On Harvey Moon was revived in 1995, he played the eponymous hero.

Hugo, an antique dealer, appeared in Bad Girls in 2005. Henson appeared on BBC1 soap opera EastEnders in February 2006, portraying Jack Edwards. Due to health issues, Henson and the company halted operations towards the end of the year.

Henson was the first character in 1991, the second in 1998, and the third in 2007. In an episode of the ITV period drama Downton Abbey, Charles Grigg, a former acquaintance of Carson the butler, appeared in two more episodes in 2010. In the pilot episode of the mid-1970s comedy Lucky Feller, he also played Randolph Mepstead, the older brother of David Jason's character.

In the Fawlty Towers episode "The Psychiatrist," Henson played Mr. Johnson. Despite his 50 years of professional acting, Nicky Henson's tombstone would likely read: "Here lies Nicky Henson – he was in one episode of Fawlty Towers." He was charged a modest appearance fee and was told he could get the same back in repeats fees.

Henson's film appearances include Witchfinder General (1968), There's a Girl in My Soup (1970), Moso Squadron (1970) and Psychomania (1973). He has performed in The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones (1976) and No. 77. 1 of the Secret Service (1977) before returning to supporting roles in Vera Drake (2004) and George Clooney's Syriana (2005).

Henson appeared in numerous Shakespearean plays (including a time with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977) and had lead roles in Looking Back in Anger, Man and Superman, Rosencrantz, and others. She Stoops to Conquer, Noises Off, and others. In the original 1964 London version of Camelot opposite Laurence Harvey as King Arthur, he appeared as Mordred. Henson appeared in An Ideal Husband, Oscar Wilde's debut on Broadway, opposite Stephanie Beacham. For his role in Enter the Guardsman, he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1998 for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical.

With a production of The Provok'd Wife, he began directing at LAMDA's Restoration Workshop. He directed Only When I Laugh at the Arcola Theatre in London and Alan Ayckbourn's Intimate Exchanges at Sheringham Little Theatre in 2009.

In the Space Force series 1 and 2 (1984-1985), Henson appeared as Lemuel "Chipper" Barnet.
