Nick Newell Life

Nick Newell (born March 17, 1986 in Milford, Connecticut) is an American mixed martial artist currently signed to Bellator MMA, competing in the lightweight division.

Early life

Newell was born with congenital amputation of his left arm, which ends just below his elbow. Newell has a short yet muscular forearm that he acquired from a young age to grasping objects with. Newell was born with a stump and had to use it like a hand from birth. Newell grew up playing first soccer and then baseball, but Jonathan Law High School champion David Gordon changed to high school wrestling. He considered quitting right away after his first session because it was "the hardest thing I'd done in my life," but his mother did not encourage him to, so he worked hard from then on.

Newell, who had graduated from high school, enrolled at Western New England University, where he continued wrestling. He has won over 300 titles in wrestling between high school and college (if you include non-competitive matches in college).

While growing up, Newell adored former Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott, who has no right hand and was a catalyst for Newell to try himself.

Curt Hawkins, a former WWE wrestler, was his roommate in college. They'd watch The Ultimate Fighter, which was on the same channel right after WWE Raw, and Newell has said that this is what inspired him to take up MMA.

Personal life

Wyatt (born 2018) and Brady (born 2020), Newell and his wife have two sons, Wyatt (born 2018) and Brady (born 2020).

The life of Newell is chronicled in the film Notorious Nick, in which Cody Christian plays him.

In Milford, Connecticut, Newell's Combat Arts Academy runs a MMA academy.

Nick Newell Career

Mixed martial arts career

He had an amateur record of 5 victories and 1 loss before turning pro. He describes his early MMA career as a contest, not because he lost, but because some fighters didn't want to face a one-armed soldier. If they won, the potential opponents who fought back said it would have been a lose-lose proposition for them; if they lost, it would have been against a one-armed fighter; if they lost, it would've been against a fighter with just one arm. As a result, finding quality opponents became a battle for Newell.

In 2011, Newell signed a multi-fight contract with both Shark Fights and Xtreme Combat Championships. He was supposed to have made his Shark Fights debut at Shark Fights 19, but he was forced to cancel due to an injury. At XFC 15, he had his first match with XFC. Tribute. In honor of Nick's acquaintance and fellow XFC signee Abi Mestre, who was killed in a motorcycle crash, the event was renamed 'Tribute.' Mestre, a close friend and fellow of Newell's who joined Nick at the open tryouts for the XFC last year.

With a 71-second submission (heel hook) win, Newell defeated Denis Hernandez at XFC 15. Multiple videos and sources covered the contest, with several videos of the entire fight being posted on various MMA websites, as well as being shared on several Facebook and Twitter pages around the world.

He appeared on Bleacher Report to talk about the glam he has earned since his first televised match at the XFC event. According to him, all the fight videos have hit nearly 4,500,000 views all together.

In what was Newell's biggest test in his MMA career so far, he defeated Chris Coggins by majority vote.

At XFC 19, Newell defeated David Mays chin, rendering him unconscious.

Eric Reynolds, a Bellator veteran, took the vacant XFC Lightweight crown at XFC 21. In the first round, Newell won the fight by submission and took the XFC Lightweight Championship as a result.

On June 14, he was supposed to defend his XFC crown against Scott Holtzman, but Newell turned down the challenge, saying that he only wants to fight ex-UFC fighters. Newell will be stripped of his belt.

Newell also agreed to a multi-fighter deal with World Series of Battle on May 28, 2013. On the forthcoming WSOF 4 & 5 cards against an enemy that has yet to be revealed, WSOF President Ray Sefo predicted that Newell will be on the upcoming WSOF 4 & 5 cards. On June 20, it was confirmed that Newell would face Keon Caldwell in a World Series of Combat 4. In the first round, he advanced to the championship by submission.

At WSOF 11, Justin Gaethje was defeated by Newell for the WSOF Lightweight Championship. In the second round, he lost the match by knockout, his first defeat of his professional career.

Newell has signed a new four-fight contract with WSOF, according to the firm on February 13, 2015.

After his first defeat, Newell returned to action at WSOF 20 on April 10, 2015. He faced Joe Condon and was awarded by unanimous decision in the back-and-forth fight.

Newell would be included on Dana White's Contender Series 14 on April 25, 2018. On the July 24 version of the series, he met Alex Munoz and lost the match by unanimous decision.

On April 15, 2019, it was revealed that Newell had signed CES MMA and would make his promotional debut against Kalvin Hackney at CES MMA 56. However, Hackney was forced to withdraw from the tournament and was replaced by Antonio Castillo Jr. in the first round with a rear naked choke.

On March 13, 2020, Newell was supposed to face Zach Zane at Bellator 241. However, the whole event was eventually postponed due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 11, 2021, Newell faced Bobby King at Bellator 260. He lost the battle by a split decision.
