Career
Hassan's career began at the age of fifteen; she met film director Feroz Khan at a party in the United Kingdom and later asked her to audition with Biddu, a London-based Indian music composer, for his film Qurbani. Biddu completed "Aap Jaisa Koi," a song he composed for the film. The album was a huge success in India, and Hassan's rise quickly earned fame and acclaim. Hassan was named winner of the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback for the 1981 film, becoming the youngest winner of the competition at the age of 15, as well as the first Pakistani to win the award.
Hassan quickly collaborated with Biddu on a number of other projects; in 1981, she became the first playback artist to debut an album. Disco Deewane was her first album. The album set sales records in Pakistan and India, as well as the charts in the West Indies, Latin America, and Russia, and became a worldwide success. Hassan became a well-known pop star in Pakistan, and the album also included vocals by her brother Zohaib Hassan. EMI Group signed Nazia and Zoheb, the first South Asian singers to be signed by an international music label. She drew huge crowds, from 50,000 to 100,000 people at Calcutta Airport as a result of Disco Deewane fever.
After the debut of Disco Deewane, Biddu gave Zoheb and her a chance to appear in the film Star in 1982 but they declined and instead chose to perform the soundtrack. Star/Boom Boom's soundtrack album was released. She had been nominated for the Best Female Playback Singer award by Filmfare, but she didn't win this time. Hassan and Zohaib's popularity in Pakistan and India was boosted by the album's success, which also increased the profile of the band.
Young Tarang, Hassan's third album, was released in 1984. It was the first album in Pakistan to feature music videos, and David Rose and Kathy Rose made it in London. The album became one of Asia's most in demand. "Ankhien Milane Wale" was a hit song from the album. After the success of Young Tarang, she returned to Bollywood films as a playback artist. Hotline's fourth album was released in 1987. Aa Haan was the album's most in-demand song. Sung Sung, her sister Zohaib, and she and her brother Zohaib appeared with music maestro Sohail Rana in 1988.
The show Music '89 was hosted by her and Zohaib in 1989. Shoaib Mansoor produced the program. It was the first-ever all pop-music stage performance to be broadcast on television. The program launched the careers of many up-and-coming bands and singers, and it became very popular in Pakistan. In the same year, she hosted Dhanak on PTV.
Hassan and her brother Zohaib's album Camera Camera, released in 1991, was her fifth album. She and Zohaib announced that it would be their last album before the album's release. In 1992, the album was released. She shifted her attention away from her singing to her personal life following the album's debut. Biddu composed "Made in India" and wanted Nazia to perform it. However, the former Hassan refused to perform a song that might offend Pakistan. The song was then delivered to Alisha Chinai.
