NaVorro Roderick Bowman (born May 28, 1988) is a former American football linebacker who played eight seasons in the National Football League.

He played college football at Penn State and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

He has also played for the Oakland Raiders for a season.

Early years

Bowman was born on May 28, 1988 in District Heights, Maryland. He began playing basketball and football at a young age and was a member of the District Heights Boys and Girls Club, where he competed in both basketball and football and was invited to numerous All-Star Events. Bowman was a popular student at Suitland High School in Suitland, Maryland, and was a standout performer. He missed the majority of his senior season due to a shoulder injury, but he had a good junior season in which he had 165 tackles, 9 sacks, and 3 fumble recoveries as a linebacker and ran for 1,200 yards and 22 touchdowns as a running back. He was named the Maryland Defensive Player-of-the-Year, first-team All-State, first-team All-Conference and first-team All-Conference. Larry Johnson, Sr., recruited him to Penn State.

Personal life

Bowman obtained a bachelor's degree in criminal, law, and justice. Former Nittany Lion linebacker LaVar Arrington's bowman LaVar Arrington talks regularly by phone with Bowman. The two met first during Arrington's time with the Washington Redskins, when Bowman was playing at nearby Suitland High School. Bowman's nickname "Lavadorro" has come from his friendship, as well as their similarity in playing styles.

College career

When attending Pennsylvania State University from 2006 to 2009, Bowman was a member of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team.

Bowman appeared in nine games in 2007 after redshirting the 2006 season. In a game against Illinois, he missed two games due to a sprained ankle injury. He had 16 tackles, with a sack, a coerced fumble, a blocked kick, and a pass breakup this season.

Bowman's playing time increased in 2008, mainly due to the graduation of All-American linebacker Dan Connor and injury to presumptive starter Sean Lee. Despite the attrition, Bowman kept the Nittany Lions ranked in the top ten in three main defensive categories. Bowman, who was first in tackles for loss (16.5) and tied for third in sacks (4.0). He had two fumbles, recovered a fumble, grabbed an interceptor, and had five pass breakups.

In week four versus Temple, he made his first appearance in week four. In the 45-3 win, he had 11 tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble, and an intercept, earning him Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

He ended the season with a heavy attitude and an outstanding show. In the 2009 Rose Bowl, Bowman played against Southern California the day after his high school coach, Nick Lynch, was killed in a car accident in Maryland. Bowman responded by breaking the school's bowl record for loss (minus-21 yards), and tying the Rose Bowl record set by Ohio State's Andy Katzenmoyer in the 1997 game. Against the Trojans, he was his fourth dismissal of the season, with eight tackles (even solo) against the Trojans. Bowman was selected to ESPN's 2008-09 All-Bowl squad for his outstanding performances against the University of Carolina, one of two Big Ten players selected to the team.

Professional career

Bowman's mother announced on January 4, 2010, that he would not complete his NCAA eligibility and enter the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bowman was selected in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft on the second day by the San Francisco 49ers with the 91st overall pick. In 2010, Bowman appeared in all 16 games, beginning with Patrick Willis, who was suspended from games for Week 17 after undergoing a second surgery on his broken right hand. Bowman had a record-breaking rookie year with 46 tackles.

Bowman was the starting linebacker at inside linebacker during his second season in the NFL, after the trade of Takeo Spikes to free agency. Bowman made 143 tackles, two sacks, eight pass deflections, and three fumble recoveries by starting all 16 games and playing alongside All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis. In addition,, he was also the team's best tackler, while finishing second in the NFL in solo tackles. Bowman's tenure as a top-ranked 49ers defense set a new NFL single-season record of not allowing a running touchdown for 14 games. The previous record was held by the 1920 Decatur Staleys, who did not have a rushing touchdown in a 13-game season. The 49ers won an NFC West pennant for the 13th time, but they lost 17-20 in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Despite being voted not to the Pro Bowl for his heroic season, the Associated Press named him to the First-Team All-Pro. He had also voted No. The following players from the previous season were 85 on NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2012.

Bowman's first career interception against the Packers was his first career interception against Aaron Rodgers in the season opener.

Bowman and the 49ers appeared in Super Bowl XLVIII in his third season. The 49ers lost by a score of 31–34 to the Baltimore Ravens in the game, with nine combined tackles.

Bowman earned First-Team All-Pro honors for the third time and finished fifth in tackles for the third time. Bowman's touchdown at Candlestick Park on Sunday Night Football caught the 49ers to the playoffs for the third straight season. Bowman made 145 tackles, five interceptions, two interceptions, nine passes blocked, six forcible fumbles, and two for two fumbles in the 2013 season.

Bowman and the 49ers ended the 2013 season with a 12–4 record. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs, the 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers 23-20, with Bowman having ten tackles and a forced fumble. They defeated the Carolina Panthers 23–10 in the divisional round of the playoffs, despite Bowman's strong play and 1 sack. The Seattle Seahawks won the NFC Championship Game, with the winner winning the right to represent the nation in Super Bowl XLVIII. Bowman sustained a serious injury in the fourth quarter of the game, tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee. The 49ers lost the game 23-17.

Bowman missed the entire 2014 season due to his injury.

Bowman recovered from his knee injury that had kept him out for the previous season. Going into 2015, there was a lot of worry about his health, but the 49ers' captain played in all 16 games. He made his third Pro Bowl appearance and his fourth All-Pro appearance this season, finishing the season with a career-high and league-leading 154 tackles. He was also responsible for 2.5 sacks and two passes defenses. He ranked 60th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016.

Bowman collapsed down, gripping the lower back of his left foot during a Week 4 match against the Dallas Cowboys. Bowman had a torn achilles tendon, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2016 season, according to MRI results.

Bowman was suspended for a few weeks before expressing dissatisfaction with the decision from the 23–26 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 of the 2017 season. Bowman was released from the 49ers at his request on October 13, 2017, after the team was unable to trade him.

Bowman agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Oakland Raiders on October 16, 2017. Bowman intercepted quarterback Paxton Lynch in the end zone during Week 12 against the Denver Broncos, giving the Browns their first interception of the year after not having one in the first 11 weeks under offensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. The Raiders eventually won the game by a score of 21-14.

Bowman announced his release from football on June 4, 2019, joining the 49ers symbolically.
