Natasha Shneider Career

Life and career

Shneider was born in Riga, Latvia, (at the time a member state of the Soviet Union) to a Jewish family. She was musically gifted from an early age, and both of her parents were musicians.

Shneider, a member of 'Sovremennik', a state-run pop orchestra that featured her on vocals and piano, as well as her first husband Serge Kapustin (born 1949) on guitar and percussion. Vladimir Shneider (1951-2012) produced and performed piano and keyboard for the 'Singing Hearts', one of Russia's hottest groups in the mid-1970s, with whose output and sound heavily regulated by the Soviet authorities. "We'd sing 37 songs about how good the Communist Party is," Vladimir Shneider recalled, and if we were lucky, we'd play a mellow song like Killing Me Softly or Ain't No Sunshine. But never mind.

The Schneiderman siblings and Kapustin immigrated to the West in May 1976, but without funds or contacts, they arrived in New York City. Robin, Natasha and Kapustin's son, was born just two months after arriving. They worked day jobs and attended evening gigs around the city, and Vladimir Schneiderman changed his surname to Shneider, with Natasha changing her married surname from Kapustin to Kapustin. They arrived in Hollywood in 1978, where they met Guy Costa, the director of Motown's Studio Operations, who introduced them to Berry Gordy, the maker of Motown Records. As a result of Gordy's meeting, the first Russian band to be on a major label, according to the article. Black Russian, a newly formed band from R&B styled pop, was well received by Billboard in June 1980, including Mystified, Leave Me Now (which was later released as a single), Emptiness, New York City, and Love's Enough. The album was not a commercial success, and Black Russians did not want to continue. Natasha Shneider and Serge Kapustin were both divorced.

Natasha married her second husband Alain Johannes in 1987, and the MCA labeled the album Walk the Moon. They formed Eleven with drummer Jack Irons in 1990 and unveiled their debut album Awake in a Dream the following year. The band will continue to release four more albums in the next decade, with Irons dropping off during their third album (Thunk) in 1995 to perform with Pearl Jam and then returning for the fifth album (Howling Book) in 2003.

On The Desert Sessions, Volumes 7, 8, Shneider and Johannes performed with Josh Homme and other artists. They performed on several Lullabies' songs and appeared on the 2002 Queens of the Stone Age album Songs for the Deaf, as part of the band's tour line-up in support of their 2005 album, Lullabies to Paralyze.

They wrote, performed, and produced with Chris Cornell on his 1999 solo album Euphoria Morning, as well as being a member of his band for the subsequent tour. Shneider's song "Someone to Die For" was written alongside Cornell and Johannes Shneider and appeared on the soundtrack of Spider-Man 2 (2004), a British tribute to King and Queen's Jimmy Gnecco and Brian May. On the internet, a live version of Cornell and Eleven's song is available.

Acting career

In two feature films, Shneider appeared in both Soviet cosmonaut Irina Yakunina in the 1984 film Spiker (1986) and Polish ex exchange student Wanda Yakubovska. She appeared on the television shows Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues. Shneider wrote and performed "Who's in Control" for the 2004 film Catwoman, as well as contributing harpsichord to the 2008 Louis XIV track "Guilt By Association."
