Natalie Imbruglia Career

Life and career

Imbruglia was born in Sydney, Australia, second of Maxene (née Anderson) and Elliot Imbruglia's second daughter. Her father is of Italian descent, a Sicilian from Lipari who migrated to Australia with his family aged five, and his mother is of Irish, Scottish, and English descent, with an ancestor who arrived in Australia as a prisoner in the First Fleet. Imbruglia grew up in Berkeley Vale, New South Wales, and attended Mater Dei College. She and her family moved to Sydney, where she studied ballet, tap, and Highland dancing.

Imbruglia appeared in Coca-Cola and the Australian snack Twisties in Australian television commercials. At the age of 16, she left school to pursue acting. She won a role as Beth Brennan on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, where she shared a house with Ben Mitchell, who portrayed Cameron Hudson. She quit the show in second year and moved to London in 1994. Anne Barret, her manager, persuaded her to record a demo of four songs. After a demo of "Torn" impressed RCA Records, she signed a BMG record.

"Torn," Imbruglia's first international hit, was a cover of an Ednaswap song. It debuted on the UK Singles Chart in November 1997, ranked one on airplay around the world and number one on the Billboard Airplay chart for 14 weeks. Its single copy in the United Kingdom alone has sold more than a million copies. Based on statistics collected by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA), "Torn" was Australia's most played song on Australian radio since 1990, playing 300,500 times per day, an average of 75 per day.

In the United States, it was a radio single but not on CD. The single was on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart for 14 weeks. Singles that had not been released commercially at that time were unlikely to be on the overall Hot 100 chart (combined sales and airplay). "Torn" was heading down the charts by the time the policy was changed, so the Hot 100 reached its high of 42. The single also topped the Top 40 Mainstream/CHR Pop and Adult Top 40 charts.

For six weeks in October 1997, it tied for the most airplay performances in the United Kingdom (more than 2000 plays). It was no. Simply Red's "Fairground" is the only one in the UK radio chart for 14 weeks, only second for 14 weeks. In the 2000 Millennium Countdown show broadcast from KIIS-FM, Rick Dees named "Torn" as the 'number one radio single of 1990s' in his Top 40 Chart show.

Imbruglia performed Torn at Amnesty International's The Secret Policeman's Ball (2006), collaborating with David Armand midway through his 'interpretative dance' to perform Torn.

On September 24, 1997, Imbruglia's debut album Left of the Middle was released. It took in 350,000 people in the United Kingdom three weeks after its launch and was designated platinum. It has sold 7 million copies. "Big Mistake" was the second single in the United Kingdom after "Torn" was released at number two, ranking at #2. "Wishing I Was There" was less popular, peaking at #9 on the charts, but it was still on the top of the charts. "Wishing I Was There" peaked at #2 on UK radio in summer 1998, and on the Top 40 Show, the Top 40 Show reached its peak at #14. The final single from Left of the Middle was "Smoke," the party was more divided than ever. It was a hit in the United Kingdom and made it to the top 5, though in Australia, it fell outside the top 40. The album became a million-seller after charting well in several countries and debuting in the Top ten in the United States and UK. In 1999, she performed a cover of "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS with Tom Jones, which appeared on his album Reload.

Imbruglia received three ARIA Awards in 1998, the "Torn" single and the Left of the Middle album, as well as three consecutive Grammy nominations in 1999. She received two British Awards for Best International Newcomer and Best International Female last year. She was ranked No. 1 in the United States. No. 11 on the year's best single artists of the Net, 1998, and No. 11 on No. 11. In 2001, the 76-year-old girl died. Imbruglia's four-album contract with BMG came after her compilation album, Glorious: The Singles, 97–07.

White Lilies Island, Imbruglia's next album, was named after she grew up beside the River Thames at Windsor. Imbruglia co-wrote every track for more than three years. "That Day" the album's first single, although it did not make it to the UK Top 10 for the first time, it was stylistically different from her singles. "Wrong Impression" was the first single and charted in the Hot 100 Singles and Adult Contemporary charts in the United States. It did marginally better than That Day in the United Kingdom. The final single, "Beauty on Fire," has barely made it to the top charts worldwide and did not make it to the top 50 in Australia. The album, which was briefly involved in the Sony BMG copy protection scandal, has sold 1 million but did not have the same success as Left of the Middle.

Imbruglia's third album came in November 2003. It was not announced by the record company, which was not allowed to be revealed. Bloodshy & Avant, a Swedish pop band, were given songs to record. At the start of 2004, she and the record label were separated. Hugh Goldsmith, a former Innocent Records executive, signed her with Brightside Recordings four months later. Lorna Campbell, Rowan Atkinson's love interest, appeared in "Johnny English" in 2003, playing Lorna Campbell in a Bond girl-style fashion.

Counting Down the Days, Imbruglia's third album, "Shiver" was its first single in April 2005. "Shiver" became the longest running single in the United Kingdom since "Torn." For several weeks, it topped UK airplay charts, rising to eighth place in the United Kingdom. It became the most played song of 2005. Counting Down The Days was her first album to debut on the charts.

"Sanctuary" was the album's second single and singles that were sent to radio stations. The call was later changed to "Counting Down the Days," with stations being compelled to watch the album version because the radio mix was not complete. "Shiver" failed in the singles chart, but it revived interest in its album and received airplay in the United Kingdom. The album re-entered the top 40 in the UK charts thanks to its single.

In late October and November, Imbruglia enjoyed a brief European tour (her first since Left of the Middle) in late October and November. Despite the fact that the album never made it into the UK Top 40 again, several concerts sold out, most notably London.

In 2005, the album was the 100th best-selling album, with sales of 204,877 copies in the United Kingdom.

Imbruglia debuted in late-2005 on her fourth album. Plans in mid-2007 were changed, and her record company released a compilation of Imbruglia's ten years in music. "Glorious" was the only single from the album on BBC Radio 1 at the Chris Moyles Show. The Singles Collection debuted at No. 5 in the United Kingdom, with the single "Glorious" as a result as well as a DVD of Imbruglia's films. The album has sold 600,000 copies.

Imbruglia parted with her company, Brightside/Sony BMG, in late-2008, in the second year of her eventual 2009 album Come to Life. She received the rights to songs recorded for the album and planned to perform on her own label, Malabar Records. Ben Hillier, Dave McCracken, her then-husband Daniel Johns, Gary Clark, Jamie Hartman, Paul Harris, Shep Solomon, and Chris Martin of Coldplay co-written songs. Danton Supple and Hillier produced some tracks.

Come to Life was announced on October 2 in Australia, aided by a large television advertising campaign and press campaign. On September 19, 2009, it reached #67, Imbruglia's lowest performing album to date, with just 750 copies in its first week of launch and just two weeks in the top 100. On May 3, 2010 it was announced that the album would be released in the United Kingdom (UK), followed by the song "Scars" as a single on March 22, 2010. Following the tumultuous reception on the Australian charts, the album's official UK launch of the album and the single were postponed and eventually scrapped. All plans to debut the album in the United States were eventually postponed, though Amazon Music eventually made the album available online.

Imbruglia took a six-year absence from music after the failure of Come to Life, bringing her attention back to acting. Imbruglia's family travelled to Los Angeles where they recruited acting coach Ivana Chubbuck. She appeared in three films over the next five years, including Closed for Winter (2009), Underdogs (2013), and Among Ravens (2014).

Imbruglia made her stage debut in Things We Do For Love, a British film produced in Bath in April 2014.

Imbruglia signed with Sony Masterworks on December 3, 2014, focusing on a variety of male artists' most popular songs. The first single is a recreation of "Instant Crush," a Daft Punk hit with Julian Casablancas. Male's fifth studio album, released on July 31, was released on July 31, 2015. Imbruglia took her Acoustic Tour to Europe in the spring of 2017. She continued with a tour around the UK in 2018.

Imbruglia wrote on Instagram in November 2018 that new music was expected in 2019. Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes was in the studio with Imbruglia producing new music in February 2019. Gus Oberg, a Strokes producer, was also in the studio with Imbruglia working on new music.

Imbruglia's original record label from 1997 to 2007, with plans to release an album of new stuff sometime in 2020. This was then pushed back to 2021.

Imbruglia's first single from her sixth studio album Firebird, which was released on September 20, 2021, was "Build It Better." Amy Becker-Burnett directed the official video for "Build It Better," as well as choreography by Gregory Haney and Alex Sarmiento. "Build It Better" did not make it into the Official UK Top 100 Chart, but on the Official Singles Sales Chart Top 100 and at number 66, the highest on the Official Singles Download Chart Top 100 reached its high point, while at #67.

Imbruglia won the third series of The Masked Singer's British version as "Panda" in 2022. On February 20, 2022, Imbruglia performed her version of "Story of My Life" (a song she performed on the program). It debuted at number 49 on the UK Official Singles Sales Chart Top 100, at number 49. The Firebird album debuted at number 32 in the UK Official Album Downloads chart.

In the final-ever Neighbours episode, Imbruglia made a cameo appearance as Beth on July 28th. Felicity Scully, Holly Valance's character, was shot during her appearance.
