Natalie Dormer (born 11 February 1982) is an English actress.

Born in Berkshire, she was educated at Chiltern Edge Secondary School and Reading Blue Coat School, and later studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

She received a large amount of praise for her portrayal of Anne Boleyn on the Showtime show The Tudors (2007-08), and she was nominated for two Gemini Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. In Madonna's film W.E., she made her stage debut at the Young Vic in 2010 and portrayed the Duchess of York. Privately in Captain America 2011 and Privately in Captain America's First Avenger (2011).

She was lauded for her lead role in After Miss Julie at the Young Vic in 2012, earning a lot of critical notice.

Dormer gained international attention with her appearance on the HBO show Game of Thrones (2012–2016), for which she was nominated for two Screen Actor Guild Awards (2014–2015).

Sara Price/Jess Price in The Forest (2016) is also known for her role as Irene Adler/Moriarty on CBS' Elementary (2013–15), Cressida in the science fiction adventure films Mockingjay, Part 1 (2014) and Part 2 (2015).

Early life

Dormer was born in Reading, Berkshire, on February 11, 1982, the niece of Mark and Samantha, Gary Dormer and Claire Richards, and the nephew of Gary Dormer and Claire Richards. Her roots are both Norwegian and Welsh. Dormer attended Chiltern Edge Secondary School before heading to Reading Blue Coat School. She claims she was bullied at school, but "I can't remember why."

Dormer studied dance at the Allenova School of Dancing while attending school. She claims she was the family's "academic hopeful" and was initially offered a chance to study history at the University of Cambridge; but, on her A-level History exam, she did not obtain the A grade she needed after misreading a question. Dormer applied for drama schools and studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Personal life

Dormer has been in a long-term friendship with David Oakes, whom she met while she was not attending a Venus in Fur. In January 2021, she gave birth to their daughter.

Dormer played Victoria in Casanova, six months after graduating from Webber Douglas. It was her debut in 2005. Lasse Hallström, the scriptwriter, was so impressed with Dormer's comedic timing that he ordered her to extend her role. Dormer appeared on Distant Shores in 2005. Dormer was out of work for ten months after the filming of Casanova, a role she attributes to "poor representation." She was directing an independent film but funding caused delays. Dormer, who was kicked out of auditioning, worked as a waitress and data entry. "The best lesson," she says during her out-of-work stint.

Dormer appeared Anne Boleyn in the first two seasons of The Tudors in 2007, 2007, which received acclaim. Dormer appeared in the play Sweet Nothings in March 2010 as Mizi at the Young Vic Theatre in London. Dormer played Margaery Tyrell in HBO's fantasy TV series Game of Thrones from 2012 to 2016. She gained international recognition for her role, and she received critical acclaim for her work. Dormer appeared in After Miss Julie by Patrick Marber in March 2012. She appeared in Neverwhere's radio play, based on Neil Gaiman's book. She appeared in Rush and the thriller The Counselor later this year. She appeared in A Long Way From Home. Dormer appeared in the final three episodes of the CBS series Elementary in 2013; she reprised the role in the second season. Dormer was to appear in The Scandalous Lady W, a BBC drama based on the book Lady Worsley's Whim by historian Hallie Rubenhold, published in November 2014. Dormer appeared in Cressida in the last two films in the Hunger Games franchise, which were released in 2014 and 2015. She shaved the left side of her head for the role. Dormer and Mel Gibson worked in The Professor and the Madman in August 2016, alongside Sean Penn and Mel Gibson. The Forest, directed by music video and short-film producer Jason Zada, was Dormer's first feature film role. The film was released in January 2016 by Focus Features in the United States.

Dormer appeared in Screen Gems' action thriller Patient Zero in September 2014, alongside Matt Smith and Game of Thrones co-star John Bradley. Stefan Ruzowitzky, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, was directing the film, which was based on a Mike Lever script. Before being limited theatrically released by Vertical Entertainment on September 14, 2018, Patient Zero was broadcast on demand until August 14th, 2018. Dormer was cast as schoolteacher in Picnic at Hanging Rock, an adaptation of Joan Lindsay's 1967 Australian book of the same name. Dormer appeared in David Ives' Venus in Fur in October 2017, returning to the stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in October 2017. The love-making scene in this film is a metaphor for how my character interacts with Ed Skrein's role. Dormer will narrate Harry Potter's A History of Magic after her audio work on Neverwhere in August 2018. Dormer says she "always loved the Harry Potter books" and that it was "fun to be part of the wizarding world family." It was announced in October 2018 that she would play Vivien Leigh in Vivien Leigh's miniseries Vivling. The series revolves around Leigh's classic films, including Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire. The show will be produced and produced by Dormer.
