Narcissa Wright Career

Career

Wright's interest in glitches and exploits helped to finish games faster than their designers had predicted. At the Speed Demos Archive's forums, she began reading articles about speedrunning games. She soon began to speedrun games and spent hours playing games, most notably The Legend of Zelda and The Wind Waker. While streaming on her Twitch account, Wright played both of the games for hours, bringing up a large following. Wright set a new record for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in July 2014, finishing the game in 18 minutes and ten seconds. This run is one of the most popular speedruns of Ocarina of Time, thanks in part to Wright's video describing the running's methods, which has over a million views on YouTube. Joel W. "Jodenstone" Ekman beat the record for half a year. As Wright's fame grew, she began to play more games, including Paper Mario and Castlevania 64.

SpeedRunsLive was created by Jenny and Daniel "Jiano" Hart in 2009 together. Through a Racebot-led Internet Relay Chat forum, the two aim to build a "fully developed speedrunning racing platform." Soon, Twitch would host several speed runners. In the past hosted by Speed Demos Archive, Wright and several other members of SpeedRunsLive have attended various charitable functions, most notably Awesome Games Done Quick. She has participated in virtually all of these marathons by playing games during marathons.

Wright is also a versatile Melee actor who has appeared on Melee in 2013 and 2014.

Wright and fifteen others were invited by Nintendo to the Nintendo World Championships in 2015. She made it to the final round of the tournament, where she faced John Numbers with John Toby to get as far as possible in a series of four Super Mario Maker levels. She finished second in the Championships after having trouble with a portion of the final level, and Shigeru Miyamoto awarded a New Nintendo 3DS XL for her efforts.

In November 2015, Wright came out as a transgender woman and began to transition, changing her name to Narcissa. Her public transfer made her vulnerable to persistent bullying. She suffered a hand injury while running at a high speed. The change in the direction of speedrunning to less repetitive, social games like Super Smash Bros., with her viewership declining a significant part of it. She was forced to stop speedrunning due to her hand injuries, but she returned to speedrunning in 2017 with the publication of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Multiple times her Twitch livestreaming account has been banned. In April 2016, she briefly stopped using her own account due to bullying. In 2018, her Twitch account was suspended indefinitely as a result of breaching the site's policies regarding nudity and sexual content. Wright returned to Twitch and was briefly suspended in March 2022 after a viewer on-stream saw graphic material. Twitch initially suspended Wright's suspension before permanently banning her after threatening herself and others in Twitch. She continued to stream on YouTube.
