Nacer Chadli (born 2 August 1989) is a Belgian professional footballer who plays for Anderlecht, on loan from Monaco, and the Belgian national team. He began his career in the Eerste Divisie with AGOVV Apeldoorn in 2010, and he was transferred to top-flight FC Twente, where he won the KNVB Cup in his first season.

Chadli joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 and went on to West Bromwich Albion three years later, earning him a whopping £13 million. Chadli played for Morocco in 2010 as his father is of Moroccan descent, but he later changed allegiance to Belgium.

He has played for Belgium and represented the country at the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018.

Club career

Chadli played his youth football at JS Thier-à-Liège, Standard Liège, and MVV Maastricht. He was recruited by Dutch second division team AGOVV Apeldoorn in the summer of 2007, who scouted him at MVV's youth academy. He was considered a natural performer here. Chadli's behaviour was being monitored by AGOVV, but he went under the name "Kaliffe" because technical manager Ted van Leeuwen was concerned that other clubs would demonstrate their interest. In a match against FC Volendam, Chadli scored his first goal in professional football for AGOVV.

Chadli joined FC Twente in 2010 and became the first team player for the then reigning Ethical Economists. He was the winning one over league rivals PSV for his first Eviction attempt. In the competition's group stage, he made his European and Champions League debut against Internazionale on September 14 in a 2–2 home draw against Internazionale. He scored his first Champions League goal away at Tottenham Hotspur (4–1) on September 29, and his second at Werder Bremen on November 2nd was a 0–2 away victory. He scored again in the Champions League against Tottenham from a free kick on December 7th, the goal securing a draw for Twente at home, 3-3.

Tottenham Hotspur reached an agreement with Twente on a £7 million transfer fee to sign Chadli on July 21, 2013. Chadli, the club's founder, and a medical, will join the Spurs squad for pre-season training in Hong Kong, according to the club's announcement that subject to an agreement of personal terms and a medical. Chadli had signed the squad that was training sessions prior to the club's participation in the 2013 Premier League Asia Trophy, according to the club on July 23rd. Chadli finally agreed to terms on 26 July and became a full Tottenham fan, playing his Spurs debut in a 5–2 friendly loss to AS Monaco on August 3rd. On August 18, his Premier League debut, a 1–0 victory over Crystal Palace, before winning by 1–0, then scoring his first Premier League goal against Newcastle United on February 12, 2014.

Tottenham defeated Queens Park Rangers 4–0 at home on August 24, 2014, the second matchday of the 2014-15 season. Chadli scored twice twice. Chadli's form came to an end, with several goals against Tottenham's North London rivals Arsenal. However, his form was cut short due to injuries, and before he could return to form, tragedy struck his family after his father died. Chadli gradually returned to form, scoring two goals in two games against Newcastle United and Southampton in late April and ten in the Premier League, taking his season total to 12, ten. In a 2–0 victory over Hull City on 16 May 2015, Chadli raised his total Premier League goals by rounding the goalkeeper.

West Bromwich Albion agreed to a contract with Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record transfer fee of £13 million on August 29, 2016. In a 1–0 loss to Bournemouth, he made his debut. On his home debut, Chadli scored twice and got two assists, his second league appearance for the club, which culminated in a 4–2 win over West Ham United.

Chadli suffered with persistent thigh pains in 2017-18, and he made just three appearances in a West Bromwich Albion team that was later relegated. He made five appearances, scored once, and a free kick in a 1–1 draw at Leicester City on October 16, 2017.

Monaco reported the signing of Chadli on a three-year contract on August 30, 2018. They paid more than €12 million to West Bromwich Albion to ensure the multipurpose midfielder's services. He was united with Belgian national team player Youri Tielemans at the club. Chadli and Monaco qualified in the Champions League. However, in Ligue 1, he had an uneven season as Monaco continued to struggle against relegation from the league throughout the season, with Monaco only obtaining it at the end of the season. Chadli had only 1,058 minutes in Monaco, and neither scored a goal or made an assist in all competitions.

After being sidetracked at the French club, Chadli joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan from Monaco on August 11th. In the Belgian First Division A, player-manager Vincent Kompany was able to persuade Chadli. He was the third Belgian international to return to Belgium to play after Kompany and Simon Mignolet. Anderlecht resigned from Chadli at Monaco, earning more than € 230,000 per month. Anderlecht wanted to invest to bring their children to a higher level with the help of Chadli and a few other experienced signings.

In a 4–2 loss to Kortrijk on August 17, he made his Anderlecht debut. The match marked his debut in the highest Belgian division, which he had left at the age of 17. Despite his injury woes, Chadli was one of the team's highlights of the season. In 17 league appearances, he scored eight goals and five assists. However, Anderlecht did not sign him on a long-term loan as the loan ended because the club did not have the funds.

Chadli joined Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir on September 10, 2020. He signed a two-year contract with the club and was given number 11 in jerseys. Başakşehir were the defending Süper Lig champions and had thus qualified for the Champions League group stage. He still had one year of his contract with Monaco, but he didn't have a hope of playing time there at the time of signing, but not have any expectations of playing time. He was reunited with a number of former Premier League players, including Martin krtel and Demba Ba, while at the club.

Chadli made his first appearance for Başakşehir in a league match against Gençlerbirli on November 8th, after being injured during the first two months of his tenure with the club. In the 79th minute, he arrived as a replacement for Deniz Türüç, when Başakşehir were down 0–1. Chadli went on to contribute a great deal to his team's triumph, earning two assists as the team rescheduled the game to secure a 2–1.

Chadli joined Belgium's First Division A club K.V.C. on September 6, 2022. Westerlo is on a season-long loan.

International career

Chadli, a dual citizen of Belgium and Morocco, would therefore be able to represent either country or region. He made his Moroccan debut on November 17th in a 1–1 friendly draw against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on November 17, 2010 and was named man of the match. On January 28, 2011, however, he declared his intention to represent Belgium at the international level, but it was not allowed because he had not yet participated in a competitive match for Morocco. He made his Belgian squad debut against Finland on February 9, 2006 in a friendly match against Finland.

Chadli has played for the Belgian national team, scoring his first international goal against Azerbaijan in a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan in the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on March 29th.

Chadli scored what would have been his third international goal in a pre-2014 World Cup friendly against Luxembourg on May 26, 2014. The game, on the other hand, was later found null because coach Marc Wilmots had made seven substitutions rather than the allowed six.

Chadli was called to Belgium's squad for the 2014 World Cup on May 13, 2014. He started in midfield but Dries Mertens was recalled at halftime in the team's first game of the tournament, a 2–1 victory over Algeria in Belo Horizonte.

He was appointed to Belgium's preliminary squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow in May 2018.

Chadli came off the bench to score the winning goal in injury time on July 2, helping Belgium beat Japan 3–2 in the round of 16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The goal of the tournament in the 2018 World Cup has been determined by the BBC panel as the primary aim.
