Mushfiqur Rahim Career

Early career

Rahim played for Bangladesh Under-19s before playing for the national team. He represented them in three Youth Tests and 18 Youth One Day International (ODIs) between 2004 and 2006, averaging 31.75 and 36.00 with the bat in the respective formats. Rahim completed his studies at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports.

Rahim captained the Bangladesh team, which included future international players Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal among others, during the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup, which was hosted by Sri Lanka in February. Rahim was one of two players at the tournament with Test-match expertise. Bangladesh reached the quarter finals of the tournament under his leadership. Rahim was called back to the senior Test squad in 2005 for the first time since the England tour. Khaled Mashud was selected as the wicket-keeper for the series against Sri Lanka, with him selected as a specialist batsman.

Domestic and T20 franchise career

He represents Rajshahi Division on the domestic level. All of Mushfiqur's runs appeared in T20 cricket: Dumondo Rajshahi, Nagena Nagas, Sylhet Royals, Karachi Kings, Barishal Bulls, Nangharhar Leopards, Khulna Tigers, and Beximco Dhaka.

Rahim scored his highest score in a one-day match in December 2010. As his team lost by 8 runs, he was playing for Rajshahi in the National Cricket League.

Rahim is the representative of Rajshahi Division of domestic cricket, with over 6500 first-class runs to his name, including twelve half-centuries and thirty-four centuries.

In the match against Central Zone, Mushi scored his 1st first-class wicket when dismissing Nurul Hasan, a North Zone player, in a bowling figure of 1–23 in ten overs.

In 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) founded the Bangladesh Premier League (BCB), a twenty20 tournament will be held in February of this year. Mushfiq was made the 'icon player' for Duronto Rajshahi by the BCB. Duronto's leadership got off to a slow start to advance to the semi-finals, where they lost to Barisal Burners for 234 runs out of 11 matches.

Following the initial draft for the 2012-13 Bangladesh Premier League, he was named in the squad for Sylhet Royals in January 2013. He was the top run-scorer in the tournament, with 440 runs in 13 games at an average of 40.40.

Following the draft for the 2016–17 Bangladesh Premier League, he was selected in the squad for the Barisal Bulls team in November 2016. With 341 runs in 12 games at an average of 37.88, which included two half-centuries, he was one of the top run scorers in the tournament.

Following the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League, he was selected in the squad for the Chittagong Vikings team in October 2018. With 426 runs in thirteen matches, he was the top run-scorer for the team in the tournament.

In November 2019, he was chosen to play for the Khulna Tigers in the 2019-20 Bangladesh Premier League. He was the second highest run-scoring in the tournament, scoring 491 runs in 14 matches, averaging of 70.14 which included 4 half-centuries. During the 40th match of the tournament, he recorded his best knock of unbeaten 98 runs against Cumilla Warriors.

In the first edition of the Afghanistan Premier League tournament in September 2018, he was selected in Nangarhar's squad.

In 2020-21 Bangabandhu T20 Cup, he competed for Beximco Dhaka.

International career

In 2005, Rahim was selected for Bangladesh's tour of England. It was Bangladesh's first tour of England, where they encountered unfamiliar weather and the batsmen suffered against seam bowling and uneven bounce through the series. According to Wisden, Mushfiqur modified his batting style in the warm-up matches, "consistently playing late and straight" and scored 63 against Sussex, who scored 115 not out against Northamptonshire in the warm-up matches.

Despite being initially selected as a part-time wicketkeeper, his performances in the warm-up matches culminated in his selection for the first Test at Lord's as a specialist batsman as well. In the first innings, the 17-year-old Rahim scored 19 runs in the first innings, being one of only three batsman to reach double figures when Bangladesh was dismissed for 108. He did not participate any more in the tour after twisting his ankle.

Rahim was selected in Bangladesh's squad to tour Zimbabwe for five ODIs in 2006. He was one of three uncapped ODI players named in the squad, as well as all-rounders Farhad Reza and Shakib Al Hasan. At Harare against Zimbabwe, he scored his maiden half-century.

His good results led him to his selection as the first-choice wicketkeeper in the West Indies, ahead of Khaled Mashud.

Rahim was recalled for the second Test against Sri Lanka in July 2007, after replacing Mashud. Despite the fact that Bangladesh lost by an innings and 90 runs, Rahim teamed with Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh's current captain, to score a record 191 for his sixth-wicket team. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) awarded Rahim a one-year contract (third tier) in December 2007, one of the Board's 22 central contracts at the time.

Rahim suffered with a string of poor runs, including five wickets in which he collected four runs in total after the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. As a result, when South Africa toured in March for three ODIs and Bangladesh returned to Pakistan for five ODIs next month, Rahim was disregarded in favour of Dhiman Ghosh.

Rahim was recalled to the squad for a tri-series against Pakistan and India, as well as the 2008 Asia Cup. Rahim's contract was revived in April 2009, marking Rahim as Bangladesh's first choice 'keeper.'

In August 2009, Rahim was appointed vice-captain for Bangladesh's tour of Zimbabwe. Shakib Al Hasan, the previous holder, was filling-in as the captain of the wounded Mashrafe Mortaza. Bangladesh won the five-match ODI series 4–1. Rahim scored 98, his highest score in list A matches of 58, helping his team win. Rahim finishes the tour as Bangladesh's fourth-highest run scorer, with 169 runs in the series at an average of 56.33.

Rahim retained vice-captaincy for the home Test series against India in January and February 2010. Bangladesh won by 113 runs on the fifth day of the first Test and became the fastest by a Bangladeshi in Test cricket on Jan 21. In February and March, England toured Bangladesh for two Tests and three ODIs, where Bangladesh lost both versions. Rahim was his team's second-best run-scoer in the series. In the first Test, he scored two half-centuries, becoming the sixth Bangladesh batsman to achieve the feat.

Rahim's success in England's return tour in May had impressed at home, and the rankings were likely to be highly coveted. Rahim could have scored 40 runs from two Tests as Bangladesh's batsmen struggled in English weather, ending in a 2–0 loss. In the first ODI of the tour, Rahim was struck in the chest while keeping wicket to spinner Faisal Hossain. An x-ray revealed no fractures, but as a precaution, he was off for a week, missing the remainder of the story.

In November 2010, the BCB announced 16 central contracts. Rahim was one of six players in the top leagues. Tamim Iqbal was appointed Bangladesh's vice-captain in December 2010.

Rahim was included in Bangladesh's 15-man squad for the 2011 World Cup. Bangladesh was disqualified from the group stage, and Rahim had a bad tournament personally. In Bangladesh's domestic competition, there were rumors that he could be dropped, particularly because fellow wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh was scoring well. Mushfiqur's second century against Zimbabwe in August 2011 was not enough to prevent Bangladesh from losing the third one-day series by five runs.

Rahim was named Bangladesh captain on September 20, 2011, taking over from Shakib Al Hasan after a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe. The announcement was made midway through the BCB Cup, a tournament involving the senior Bangladesh team, Bangladesh A, and a side made up of academy players. Rahim had already been captaining Bangladesh in the tournament on a temporary basis. Bangladesh A. R. ruled the competition.

In 2011, the West Indies toured Bangladesh for a T20I, three ODIs, and two Tests. Rahim put on a Man-of-the-Match display in his first international match as captain, scoring 41 not out of 26 balls to lead his team to victory. Bangladesh wins the ODI series 2–1. Rahim was Bangladesh's top run-scorer with 100, including a fifty. Pakistan toured for three ODIs and two Tests in the month that followed. Bangladesh lost the ODI series 3–0, while Rahim managed only 12 runs from three wickets.

Bangladesh defeated two out of the three games they had played in the 2012 Asia Cup, under Rahim's captaincy, and advanced to the final for the first time. His grade A+ central contract was renewed in April. Rahim became the first Bangladeshi to score a double hundred during the tour of Sri Lanka's first test on March 11, beating the previous record of 190 set by Mohammed Ashraful earlier in the day.

Rahim resigned as captain on May 8, 2013, but Mushfiqur revealed he had made a "mistake" and that the BCB had retained Mushfiqur as captain until the end of the year.

Rahim continued his captaincy in 2014 but lost to Sri Lanka in a home series. He sustained a finger injury during the series, and he was replaced with Mohammad Mithun in wicket keeping. He also missed out on T20 international matches against Sri Lanka, in which Mashrafe Mortaza took over as captaincy. He scored his second one-day international century against India at the start of the 2014 Asia Cup, but he failed in the match due to his injury.

Rahim continued his good form in the next match against Afghanistan, but Bangladesh lost the match by 32 runs, the first time they had lost to an associate team after gaining Test status. Even after scoring 326, which was their highest ODI score, thanks to Shahid Afridi's knock, his team lost the match against Pakistan in the same tournament. They then lost in their last match of the season to Sri Lanka, resulting in them losing all three matches.

Bangladesh qualified for the super 10s in the 2014 ICC World Twenty2020 by winning two out of three matches in the qualifying stage. However, they were disqualified in the super 10s after losing all of the four matches.

In August 2014, Bangladesh toured the West Indies for the first time. Mushfiqur scored 116 in the second innings, his third Test century. However, they failed both three ODIs and two Test matches.

Mortaza was the BCB's captain in September 2014, but Rahim retained Test captaincy. In both the three Tests and five ODIs, Bangladesh whitewashed Zimbabwe in November 2014. For the ODI matches, he was also voted man of the series.

Bangladesh defeated England in the group stage of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, as a result of their qualification for the second quarterfinals. Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim shared the best match (141 runs) for Bangladesh in a World Cup match against England, which was also Bangladesh's best ODI partnership against England.

Rahim was bitten on the back of the helmet during the first Test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in January 2017 and admitted to hospital immediately on the fifth day of match. Tim Southee bowled Rahim just behind the left ear as he attempted to duck in the 43rd of Bangladesh's second innings. Initial X-rays and scans of his neck suggested that he was out of immediate danger. After receiving medical attention, Rahim attended the post match presentation.

Rahim played his 100th Test against Sri Lanka in March 2017. He was Bangladesh's first wicketkeeper to reach this milestone.

Rahim became the first batsman for Bangladesh against South Africa in any form on October 15, 2017.

By Cricinfo, he was selected as wicketkeeper in the year 2017 Test XI.

He scored 219 not out against Zimbabwe in November 2018 and became the first wicket-keeper-batsman to score two double centuries in Test cricket (third double century is expected in 2020). He became Bangladesh's second batsman to score 4,000 runs in Tests later this month against the West Indies.

He was selected in Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. He scored an 80-ball 78 in Bangladesh's first innings of the World Cup against South Africa, giving him a 142-run partnership with Shakib Al Hasan. Bangladesh finished on 330/6 from their 50 overs, defeating South Africa by 21 runs.

Mushfiqur played in his 350th international match for Bangladesh in Bangladesh's next match of the tournament, against New Zealand.

Mushfiqur scored his first century in the match against Australia. He scored 102* in 97 balls, his third Bangladeshi batsman to score a century in the world cup. Bangladesh also scored 333 for 8 wickets in this match, smashing the record of their highest ODI runs in this series.

In February 2020, when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh, he scored an unbeaten 203 runs, becoming the first Bangladeshi batsman to score three double-hundreds in Test cricket.

Mushfiqur was named in Bangladesh's Test and ODI squad for their series against the West Indies in December 2020. This was Bangladesh's first international series after the COVID-19 pandemic that had suspended cricket in the country since March 2020.

Mushfiqur scored 125 and assisted his team in winning the second ODI and the series as well (Bangladesh's first ever series victory over Sri Lanka on May 2021). Mushfiqur won the match and became the first Bangladeshi player to win 150 international matches. Later in the series, he became the man of the series and scored the most runs (237) in the series.

He was selected in Bangladesh's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in September 2021.
