Moudud Ahmed (born 24 May 1940) is a Bangladeshi lawyer and politician.

He is currently a member of Bangladesh's standing committee.

Ahmed was elected as a Jatiya Sangsad member a total of five times from Noakhali-1 and Noakhali-5 constituencies.

After independence, Ahmed was Bangladesh's postmaster general.

Since the eighties, he has served in various political positions, including Deputy Prime Minister (1978-1978 and 1987-1989), Prime Minister of Bangladesh (1989-1990) and Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs (1990-1989).

Personal life and family

Ahmed was married to Hasna Jasimuddin Moudud, the daughter of Bengali poet Jasimuddin. Ana Kashfiya Moudud, poet Ana Kashfiya Moudud, has a daughter. Asif Momtaz Moudud, their oldest son, died at the age of 3. In 2015, Aman Momtaj Moudud, his son, died of dengue fever.

Ahmed, a practicing barrister, was a litigant barrister in Bangladesh's Supreme Court. He was a fellow at Heidelberg University in Germany. He was the Bland Visiting Professor at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in the fall of 1997. He was also a member of Elliott School's International Council.

Early life and career

Ahmed was born in 1940 in the Bengal Presidency during the British Raj. Ahmed's father, Motazuddin Ahmed, was a Sufi Islamic scholar and imam in Paribagh, Maulana. Ahmed received his BA and MA in political science from the University of Dacca. In 1966, he was summoned to the English Bar at Lincoln's Inn in London.

Ahmed, who was based in the United Kingdom, was part of a burgeoning intellectual movement among East Pakistani students in the hopes of a self-governing Bangladesh. On his return to Dacca, he joined Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's legal team during the Agartala Conspiracy Case (1968). He was accompanied by Sheikh Mujib's Bengali delegation to the Rawalpindi Round Table Conference in 1969 with Field Marshal Ayub Khan. Ahmed was involved in several key events in the run-up to Bangladesh's independence. During the 1971 Liberation War, he served with the Provisional Government of Bangladesh in Calcutta. He was employed in the External Affairs of the Department. Ahmed spoke at several humanitarian rallies for Bengali genocide victims. He once triggered a whole protest in London by shouting "We are alive, but not yet free."

Ahmed was one of the founding members of the 33 member Committee for Civil Liberties and Legal Aid, which was established to shield opposition politicians and members of civil society from the government's fury on 31 March 1974. After the independence of Bangladesh, Ahmed became Bangladesh's first Postmaster General.

Ahmed was arrested on orders from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in December 1974, but was later released.
